Updated for 2019:
Hey friends! After years of using Mailchimp, my business and mailing list had grown to the point where it no longer served me well (Mailchimp is fantastic if you’re starting out – especially on a low budget) and I decided to switch to ConvertKit.
ConvertKit has helped me in so many ways: from helping me reduce the amount of time I needed to spend on mailing lists, to increasing conversation rates and revenue.
Interested in ConvertKit? Check out my 5 day challenge for beginners here – and otherwise, continue on to read this awesome Mailchimp tutorial!
============================================================
I realized that tons of you out there are perplexed on how to get started using Mailchimp and building an email list. It’s all good, yo. I was extremely confused about how to create and send a newsletter when I first made mine, too. There’s a little learning curve when you’re getting started, but I hope today’s tutorial gets all your questions answered. This tutorial includes video, screenshots, and step-by-step instructions…the whole shebang! I want it to be extremely clear for you to understand. Now, let’s get crackin’.

First, why do I recommend Mailchimp to people who are getting started with an email newsletter?
- Mailchimp is one of the easiest email systems that I’ve seen and has limited (but just enough!) features, making it great for beginners or intermediate users.
- Mailchimp is FREE for up to 2,000 subscribers, which can’t be said of, well, any other platform that I know of.
- It’s extremely popular, so it integrates seamlessly with tons of other softwares.
- It includes a drag and drop editor, so designing your newsletters is a piece of cake (chocolate, if we’re taking orders).
Basically, it’s the bomb, and if you’re new to email marketing, it’s the place to be.
Today, I’m going to be covering everything you should know, including:
- What are”campaigns” and “lists”?
- How do you create a subscription form where people can sign up for your newsletter?
- How to design your newsletter and subscription form without code.
- How to send your first newsletter.
- Why you need to change your mailing address and how to do it.
- What automation is and some clever ways to use it.
Now, let’s jump right into this tutorial, y’all. There’s a lot to cover!
First, if you prefer to watch things on video, I recorded a video tutorial for you right down below. This tutorial covers just about everything that’s in the rest of the post and works really well if you want to set up your account and get started as I’m explaining how to do things. Make sure to watch it in HD!
Step 1: Create a List of Subscribers
A “List” is Mailchimp’s lingo for “the place where you’ll collect your subscribers.” You can create multiple lists, if you’d like. For example, maybe you want to create a list solely for clients and another solely for blog readers. Bottom line: You need to create a list in order to start receiving email addresses.
First navigate up to “Lists” at the top. Then click “Create List.”

Next, fill in the details for your list! Dudes, how easy is this so far? These details, such as the “from name” are what people will see in the “from” field when they receive your email. So you probably want to include your name or your business name, as well as an email address where they can contact you or reply to.

You’ll also notice that your address is here. Why? Well, it’s a legal requirement to include your mailing address in every email you send. Gasp! Say whaaaa? Of course, I don’t recommend sending out your home mailing address, unless your list happens to be for, say, a family reunion full of people who you’d happily give your address to anyways.
But chances are, you’re using your email list to communicate with blog readers or business prospects. In that case, I highly recommend getting a P.O. Box. They are surprisingly cheap and will give you the peace of mind that A) you’re not sending your mailing address out into the world, and B) you’re not breaking any laws (which include hefty fines). In a later step in this post, I’ll be showing you how to change your address. Woohoo!
SUPER SERIOUS WARNING: If you just read that paragraph above and are now thinking, “Meh, this is going to cost me money? Not worth it.” Then I urge you to reconsider. I know, I know, it sucks when you have to shell out money for something that isn’t bringing in an income yet. But m’friends. Your email newsletter is one of the best investments you’ll ever make. It’s worth it, yo. By the way, mine was $40 for 6 months, which comes out to a whopping $6.67 per month. You got this.
Step 2: Design Your Signup Form
After you “save” your list, you’ll be taken to your list’s dashboard. This is where you can view a list of your subscribers, check out statistics about your newsletters, design your signup forms, and more. For this step, we’ll be designing your sign up form. If you already have a list, then all you need to do is click “Lists” and then the name of the list you want to edit, which will also take you to your list’s dashboard.
Now, click “Sign Up Forms” and then “General Forms.” You’ll be taken to a page that looks like the screenshot below. Make sure it says “Signup Form” in the drop down menu.

Now, you can scroll down and customize your form. Mailchimp is awesome because it includes drag and drop form builders and plenty of options to change colors, fonts, and images. For my forms, I tend to only include a spot for a “first name” and “email address” because I like to keep things simple and have no use for a person’s last name. You’re welcome to add and remove fields to your liking.
If you click the “Design It” button, you can also customize your form’s look and design. Super easy! I created the form below in about one minute by simply customizing the fields and colors. I also created an on-brand header image to go at the top. That was made in Photoshop, but you could create something similar with services like Canva or PicMonkey.

Lastly, make sure to take note of the URL for your signup form. This is the URL you can use on social media, your blog, etc. It’s a great way to share a link to your form and encourage people to sign up for your list.

Step 3: Add Your Lead Magnet (If You Have One) to Your Welcome Email
If you’re starting an email list, I highly recommend creating a lead magnet to go with it. A lead magnet is something that you offer to people for free if they sign up for your list. Your lead magnet could be anything from a useful checklist or mini-ebook to a list of helpful resources or some worksheets. There’s really no limit as to what you can create — be inventive! The most important part is that you’re creating something that attracts your ideal audience. There’s simply no point in creating a list of people who aren’t totally interested in what you have to offer. So, try to think of something that your audience might need or would think, “whoa, that sounds so useful!”
Now that you’ve created your lead magnet, it’s time to set it up so it is automatically sent out when someone subscribes. First, I recommend saving your lead magnet as a PDF and then uploading the PDF to your website. Get this: You can easily create PDFs in Pages or Word! Just save your document as a PDF and you are golden, darlin’.
In order to upload your lead magnet to your website, just upload it as you’d normally upload an image (but remember, it’s a PDF). Then, if you’re in WordPress, go to “Media” >> “Library” and click your PDF. Then you’ll see a screen like the one below.

Just copy the URL and save it for later. This is a direct link to your lead magnet. Woohoo! You can copy it into your browser to test it out and see what it looks like. Chances are, it looks pretty cool (because you are awesome).
Now, let’s go back to Mailchimp. You should still be in the “Signup Forms” section of your list. If you’re lost, just click “Lists” at the top, then click the name of the list you’d like to send your lead magnet to. Then “Signup Form.” Select “General Forms” once again. Now, in the dropdown menu, click “Final ‘Welcome’ Email,” as shown below. It’s also imperative that you select the “Send a final welcome email” button.

Now, you can customize the contents of this email to make it fit your brand and include your lead magnet. Here’s your chance to give a warm welcome to your peeps and share a link to your lead magnet. This is a little example of what that may look like:

You can thank Mailchimp for that fat “unsubscribe here” button. 😉
You will also want to change the subject of your email! The automatic subject includes your list name followed by “subscription confirmed.” How boring, no? Not only is it generic, but it doesn’t tell people that the free lead magnet they signed up for is inside. Give them a nice welcome and let them know that their freebie awaits them.
Step 4: Change Your Mailing Address
As mentioned, it’s important to change your address because it’s legally required to include an address in the emails you send and you certainly don’t want to send your home address for obvious reasons. After you sign up for a P.O. box (mine was $40 for 6 months!), you can edit your address so that it includes your P.O. Box address. Similarly, you could use an office address here.
To change your address, click your profile picture/name in the top right. Then click “Settings” >> “Contact Information.” Here you can include your non-home address.

Step 5: Create + Send Your First Newsletter
Wow! You’re a champ. It’s just about time to send your first newsletter. *Happy Dance* Navigate your way to “Campaigns” at the top. Then click the “Create Campaigns” button in the top right. Finally, you have some options here, but I always send a “Regular Campaign” because I like to keep it OG. You’ll need to select which list to send it to and then click “Next” at the bottom.
Here you can name your campaign, include an interesting subject line, and adjust some other settings. Don’t worry too much about those other settings, just focus on your subject for now. Now you’ve reached the fun part. Designing your newsletter!
Mailchimp is awesome because it has a drag and drop editor, making it a cinch to customize your emails. First, you can select a template, which is the general layout you want your newsletter to be in. Think about what your newsletter will include and select a template that works best for those things. For example, if you’ll be sharing links to blog posts, you may want to include a template that allows you to add small images with a short description. It’s really up to you, boss.
Once you’ve selected a template, you can begin adding elements and content to it. The image at the top is a great place to add your logo, which can be designed using a number of tools, such as Photoshop, Canva, or PicMonkey. You’ll also notice a bunch of neat options on the right, like buttons, dividers, etc, which can easily be dragged and dropped into your newsletter.

If you click the “Design” tab, here you’ll have the chance to decide which colors and fonts you’ll use in your newsletter. I highly recommend selecting elements that fit and match your brand. You want to use the same colors and font styles so that people make the connection between your blog, social media and your email newsletters.

Once you’ve created a beautiful template, I highly recommend clicking “Save as Template” at the top. That will make it super easy to select your custom template in the future so that you don’t need to create a new one every time you send out a campaign.
Within your newsletter, you can include just about anything you’d like, such as a warm welcome message, links to new freebies you’ve created, information about your products, links to blog posts, brand new advice or tips, and more. Newsletters serve tons of purposes. You should get one. Once you’re all finished with your newsletter, or “campaign” as Mailchimp calls it, then click “Next” at the bottom and verify that everything looks correct and there are no errors. If you’re ready, you can hit “send,” which will send it out immediately, or you can schedule it for a date and time in the future. Magic!

Woohoo!! Glad I could help, Kaitlyn!
Hey Melyssa! Thanks so much for sharing this. I’m s.l.o.w.l.y working my way through all of the things I should probably do sooner rather than later in order to make my blog awesome. I pinned this one so I can come back and check it out. I haven’t told you before, but your blogging tips are fantastic, and your positive outlook on life always makes my day. Thank you!
Thank you for your sweet comment, Laura. I’m so happy to have you here! And slowly is better than not at all, right? 😉 I’m certain you’re doing an awesome job!
Oh wow! Thanks for uploading the video! I already favorited it to refer back to often 🙂
I’m happy you found the video helpful, Monica! Enjoy!
Can I ask a really dumb question? If I already blog, what would the purpose of a newsletter be? I love the idea, just don’t want to overload my folks!
@cheriarmour:disqus Your readers would choose to sign up to your newsletter because they value your content so you wouldn’t really be overloading your readers. If they sign up that means they want MORE from you and want to stay updated. It’s great to have a contact list of subscribers if your want to grow your blog and eventually generate income or turn it into a business perhaps. You simply need an email list if you plan to take your blog to the next level. If blogging is just a hobby, building your email list doesn’t have to be a priority. Not a dumb question at all, it took me a while to understand the value of dedicated subscribers.
Thanks for clarifying! I just signed up for Perez’s newsletter! Love it!
I use madmini at the moment, do you really think mail chimp is a better option?
I think if Mad Mimi is working for you then stick with it. 🙂 I’ve heard good things about that one, too. I just haven’t tried it myself.
I’m so overwhelmed with MailChimp and this whole newsletter biz! I’m gutted I missed the NectarChat as I am out traveling at the moment. I’ll be saving this blog post for later though, right now it is a bit too much to sink my teeth into! Thank you 🙂
Thank you Lisa! I hope you find this helpful and you can start to feel a little less overwhelmed by MailChimp! Hopefully you can make it to the next #NectarChat 😉
Thanks for this, Melyssa! Mailchimp is the very first tool that I’ve used for my email subscribers and I haven’t tried any other tool. I guess I’ll be sticking to it!
Thanks Heide, I’m glad you found this helpful! Awesome that you’re already using Mailchimp!
Great tutorial! I used mailchimp for my photography business, but will definitely be looking at your tips when I start one for the blog!
Awesome, I’m so glad to hear that, Eryn! Thanks so much for your comment 🙂
You’re welcome! Thanks for posting such great pieces!
I also love using the template for an RSS feed (the full post!) for my email list – this way I make sure that my content gets to them if they forget to come visit my site! 🙂

http://www.collectivepassions.com
This is my biggest issue, trying to sync my mail chimp list to my RSS feed. Do you have a post on this? I just can’t figure it out or what it is that I’m missing.
I’m really been wrestling with whether or not to get the PO Box. Because I’m in Canada the cost for this is much higher at about $15 for the key and $104 for 6 months. Which is a far cry from the $40/6 months it would be in the states. If visitors to my site they follow me on Bloglovin’ they’ll be updated for any post in any case. I’m really struggling with this! As someone who’s just starting out, would you say that it’s worth the cost to have a newsletter?
I’m also from Canada and wondering about this. I’ve been using Mad Mimi for my email list for the last while and now I’m considering switching to MailChimp. With Mad Mimi I never had to input a home address. I wonder if the laws are different in Canada? I’m also wondering if it would be adequate to just use a city name instead of a full address (I’ve heard that advice from some people) or if you still run the risk of getting fined…
I did hear that in Canada you don’t need your full address, but because Mail Chimp is based in the states they make you adhere to the laws of the US, regardless of where you’re from. I don’t know anything about using a city name only…
It’s part of the law now both the states and Canada need to provide physical mailing addresses for emails, which is why MailChimp requires it and I believe so does Mad Mimi. Otherwise you can get very hefty fines. I’m also Canadian and as much as I want to build up my email subscribers, $120 for 6 months is just…really intense for me right now. Not sure if it’s worth it.
What about a virtual office address? There are some ways around this I’m sure. Don’t give up!
Ahh that’s tough! I also love the input from everyone else who shared their advice or experience in this thread. I will say that starting your email list is something you shouldn’t delay, but if the higher PO box price is difficult, I would hold off on sending your newsletter until you are able to sit down and create a plan for what exactly you’d like to send and what types of things would help your audience. That way, you’re not “wasting” any of the PO box time you paid for and can hit the ground running with your newsletter.
But even before you send your first email, you can start collecting emails from your audience. It would be better if you could keep in touch with them regularly, but I definitely started collecting email addresses about a year before I ever really used my list (mainly because I didn’t know what to send them!). It was definitely nice, when I wanted to start emailing them, to already have about 1,000 people built up. So, I’d recommend trying that approach and then making the PO box investment as soon as you feel financially stable enough to do so. Then, start emailing them every 1-2 weeks. 🙂
Thank you for your reply! I wouldn’t even have through of collecting emails before I have a newsletter ready.
So if I make a list sign up in Mail Chimp, can people see my address? Or is there some other way you would suggest for collecting emails? I could put a link that says “sign up for the newsletter”, but then if I don’t make a newsletter for awhile would that be fine?
Hi @Itlibrarian! There is no way to hide your address from your newsletter. I have seen people put an asterisk on the part of the email that has the actual street address while leaving the city, state, and zip code. Just to make usre I am on MailChimp’s good side, I recently set up my email list and use a virtual mailbox (these can be searched online). It costs $5 a month and it’s an instant set up. I totally understand your hiccup about getting a PO Box because of the price in Canada; that would be a bit outside my budget too. Hope this helps!
Virtual mailbox? I had no idea that was a thing! You genius, you.
Thank you! I didn’t know that was a legitimate option. I’ll be looking into it so I can start collecting emails and getting started on deciding what I want my newsletter to be
How about using a Poste Restante (or General Delivery) address, is that allowed?
Oh my goodness!!! I have put off email newsletters because I just didn’t think I had the time to sit down and figure the whole thing out. Your video rocked! I can’t believe I waited this long! Thank you for giving me the kick I needed.
Yay! I’m so pumped to hear that, Kristine! Thank you so much for your support 🙂
With MailChimp. is it possible to send a different welcome email depending on where they signed up? Like for instance, on your site, you have the content upgrades for posts behind a password. The password is sent out to people who subscribe to the email list. But- I assume that the password is only sent out to those who sign up through the subscribe feature IN a post with a content upgrade, if you know what I mean. So, is it possible to customize the welcome email depending on the location (or which sign up form they used) of their email input? Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, but I’m trying to plan out my future email list system and I want to figure this out.
Thanks for the help with MailChimp, this was a really useful tutorial!
Katie | http://www.thoughtcouture.com
Hi Katie! That strategy would work if you create different “lists” in Mailchimp. That way, each list receives a different welcome email. The only problem is that if people are part of multiple lists, Mailchimp counts them as multiple subscribers. So once you work your way to a paid account, you could be paying for the same subscriber multiple times. If you ever run into that problem, I recommend adding Leadpages into the mix. Leadpages allows you to send welcome emails to new subscribers and you can customize all of the emails based on where they signed up from, but people will still be added to the SAME list. Hope that helps. 🙂
Thank you SO much! Even though I’ve already sent a few newsletters, this video was tremendously helpful. Love what you do! Thank you for all your help! xo
I’m so happy to hear that, Jazmine! Yay! Thanks so much for reading 🙂
This post was so helpful. Thank you !!!

Awesome! Thanks Manique!
Melyssa, I’m fairly new to Mailchimp and have found it tricky. Your tutorial makes is seem so friendly. (They need to hire you and redo their videos.) Anyway, I’m struggling with how to use Leadpages and Mailchimp together. Is there any chance you might consider a quick overview on how a person can use their Leadpages with Mailchimp? What is Leadpages role and when does MailChimp take over? I feel like I’ve created things that are duplicates. An overview of the whole process would be lovely. Thanks again for your advice and help. I’ll be coming back. Best, Diane
Thank you, Diane! So glad you enjoyed this tutorial. 🙂
That is a GREAT idea for a tutorial, by the way. I know there are lots of people who don’t understand how Leadpages fits into everything, so I love that suggestion! I just added it to a running list I keep, so hopefully you’ll see a tutorial for it here sometime very soon. 🙂
So good! I use MailChimp but I did not find it very easy to pick up and use at first.
Aw, glad you found this useful Stacia! It can be a little tricky at first but once you get the hang of it, you realize how beneficial it is!
Great tutorial! Thank you so much 🙂
Happy to help, MyMy 🙂
This is an absolutely epic post! I’ve tried Mailchimp for free for a bit. I wanted the autoresponder and prefered switching to Getresponse. I was thinking about going back with the upgrade version but I was wondering if they provide landing pages (even if it’s a paying feature)?
Also, during the 3 steps to growing your trafic webinar, I think it was Mariah who talked about sending a password after someone opts-in so they can access the library of upgrades. Is this through Mailchimp or something else?
Thank you!!
So glad you enjoyed this, Lutetia! 🙂
Mailchimp does have basic landing pages that it creates for each of your lists. For more advanced ones, you’d need to code that into a page, use a plugin, or use something like Leadpages.
As for sending a password so that they can access the library — this can definitely be done through Mailchimp. It would be the same process you’d take in Step 3 of the tutorial here — you’d just insert the password and a link to the library. 🙂
You are perfect! I’ll check how to change from getresponse! Thank you so much!!!
YOU are awesome, Lutetia! Thanks so much for all of your support, you’re so sweet! 🙂
Aw that’s a shame – I read the thread below about the PO box in Canada – I’m in the UK and PO boxes are at least £200-300 for the year which I really can’t afford. I already signed up to Mail Chimp and this was a great post to explain how to go about things, but I think I’ll hold off on this because I don’t have a plan yet and don’t want to throw money out the window until I’m sure what I want to do with this. I’ll have to try and get people to sign up by email anyway to build my mailing list just in case 🙂
Melyssa!!
Wow wow wow! Did you know, I spent the first 6 months of blogging and using Mailchimp manually sending my welcome emails?!
And when I had a blogging eBook, I did the same thing… Sent the download ASAP, when I’d get a new subscriber.
I love customizing things, so I figured out a lot of this on my own, but Step 3’s Welcome email step is a game changer for me! I truly thought it was part of the paid automation feature. So thank you SO much!
I’m going to be spending my weekend implementing a small new lead magnet, a Google Analytics trick I learned from you, Mailchimp customizing, AAAAND take note of it all on Evernote… All inspired by you! Thank you!
Which plan do you use on Mail Chimp?
I’m still using the free one! Did you have a question about it?
Hi Melyssa!
Thanks for sharing this with all of us, I was really curious about how mailchimp worked and I’m glad I ran into your site, it was very helpful and I learn a lot from your video!
I’m sure I’ll keep reading your site in the future!
Hi Eduardo! Thank you so much for taking the time to read TNC! I’m so glad you found this helpful 🙂
This tutorial is great! However, I’m new to the whole world of wordpress, and after creating a sign up form I’m left trying to figure out how to embed it to my wordpress site. Do you have any tips on how I can get it attached to my blog, or do I need to use a plugin?
Hey Mallory! Mailchimp should give you a signup form embed code that looks like a bunch of HTML. Using that, go to your WordPress widgets and add a “text” widget. Then, just copy your code into that widget.
This won’t give you a very stylized form, but it would work. To style your form without coding, I’d recommend using a plugin like Magic Action Box. 🙂
Thank you sooo Much Melyssa for this fantastic turial!!!
Just one little question. How does it work if your lead magnet is a video ?
You’re so welcome, Laura! If your lead magnet is a video, then I would upload your video somewhere and then send the link to your video in the final welcome email. If you want your video to be “private,” you can upload it to YouTube as “unlisted” so that only people with the link can view it.
Melyssa, you are AWESOME!! Your blog tips are really motivating me to make big important changes regarding my blog, and I am so pumped! I’ve worked on creating an in-depth workbook for a few weeks now, and I’m finally ready and super excited to start bringing in those email newsletter subscribers!! Thanks!
Thank you so much for this sweet comment, Hannah! I am so happy that you take the time to read TNC and find it to be helpful in your blog and business. How exciting that you’re launching your workbook soon! You are going to kill it, girl! 🙂
I use MailChimp and think it’s fantastic! I also downloaded the MailChimp app on my phone and use it to keep track of my campaigns (it makes it easy to stay updated without having to be in front of a computer).
Great idea to have the app on your phone, Samantha! That must make things so much easier 🙂
i went through this whole process, except i don’t have anyone who has subscribed yet and therefore my list is empty and it is not allowing me to complete the process. anyone know what to do?
Hey Amy! Are you offering some type of freebie in exchange for people to subscribe to your list? A free download, e-book, printable, etc. may encourage people to subscribe. Hope that helps!
Thank you so much for this walk through video on setting up MailChimp! What a great step by step guide! You have helped me so much so far on my journey to finishing my website re-launch.
I’m so happy to hear you found this helpful, Sophie! Thank you so much for reading, and good luck with your website re-launch!
This is a great article, Melyssa! I wish I had discovered it a few weeks ago when I first decided to use Mailchimp. I’ve bookmarked this article all the same because I suspect it will be useful again soon 🙂
Thank you! I’m glad you found this helpful 🙂
Hi Melyssa. Like I said before, I found your tips on how to use Mailchimp very useful but I have a question. I’ve put the URL Mailchimp gave me for my free gift to subscribers to random people in addition to those on my list. I know that people other than those on my list have downloaded my gift so my issue now is how do I find out how many people downloaded it? I’ve googled and googled but I just can’t find the answer. Please help. Thank you.
Hi there! You will need to upload it somewhere where that is trackable, such as Dropbox.
Thanks a lot, Melyssa.
Hello Melyssa,
This blogpost is in my favorite url to read since 1 month and every day I say “Ok I’ll do this tomorow”.
You know what ? Tomorow is today ! And I’m trying to figure out all this newsletter stuff….
By reading you, I just realized something very… well.. stupid… : “Wow, it’s that newsletter ? It’s like blogging but with mail ? So I have to write a campaign every time I want to talk to my readers ? So that means that every mail Melyssa is sending me by newsletter was created by campaign on Mailchimp ? OH MY GOD”.
It’s like having a second blog !
My question is, after understanding the “newsletter case”, for the moment I just want to send a mail for the automatic blogpost. So when I write a post on my blog, the readers know it. Is it possible with MailChimp ? Or do I have to use the normal RSS widget of WordPress ? If I have well understood, RSS of blogpost and newsletter is different. Right ?
Now I have to find the perfect freebie to send to my readers !
Thanks for your answer and thanks for all your rocking tips !
Hi Odile! It is possible to send an RSS campaign in Mailchimp, but I’m not too familiar with how to do that, so I recommend checking Google for that. 🙂
Awesome tutorial Melyssa! I was a little overwhelmed with the thought of setting up a newsletter for my blog. I kept returning to this post (like a stalker lol) and sifting through the information debating if I could really do it. It wasn’t until today that I actually sat and watched the video that I realized how easy this looks. I am gonna give this a whirl and my goal is to have everything set up by the weekend. I will book mark this page as I’m sure I will need to reference back. Thank you so much!
Keisha xo
Go for it, Keisha! You will be surprised how much you CAN do if you just give it a shot. I totally believe in you girl, and I am 100% rooting for you!
This tutorial SO just saved my butt. Amazing post, Melyssa. I love that you give such detailed, thoughtful instructions with images. Really girl – you’re rocking it for us #girlbosses. I love getting all of your newsletters and am addicted to all of your content. So good! Keep it up!! xo.
Hi Gemma, thanks so much for reading and for your sweet comment. Glad this could help!
Hi Melyssa. Your explanation is great, but after I customized my sign up form. How do you I use it on my website ? I want the sign up form to pop up after visiting the page for some seconds. Is this what happens with mailchimp form ? and how please
Regards,
Zainab
http://superpsychology.blogspot.com
Hey, Zainab!
If you would like a pop up, you can use an plugin called SumoMe. Its a very powerful list building application. You could also connect with LeadPages to create pop ups (this is a large investment!)
If you are just using a form, you can copy the embed code from Mailchimp into your site.
thanks Melyssa. is SumoMe paid service ?
There are free and paid options!
Where can I find the embeded code mailchimp gives? All it gives me is a url and I don’t know where to put it .-.
Thank you for this tutorial, Melyssa! It helped me make the sign up form and set up the first lead magnets for my email list (and I got my first subscribers!). Before your tutorial, I didn’t realize you could automate the sending of the lead magnet with MailChimp for free.
Hi Katri! Thank YOU. I am so glad this helps you.
What a great tutorial thanks Melissa!!! Loved it so much, and the video made it so much easier! I learned some things I never knew and great ways to upgrade my newsletter!
Thank you, thank you!

Hi Lauren, thanks so much for your comment! I am so glad to hear it helped.
Melyssa, you’re the best! Thank you for always giving away such amazing tutorials!!!
Aww, thanks Elise! I’m glad they help you 🙂
Okay! Melyssa I need help been googling and can’t find the answer to this! Please help wonder women! haha 😉
I’m trying to build my email list by offering content upgrades on every post. I use mail chimp as I can’t afford to invest in something more at the moment (board booster is my next investment as I’m in your pinnate growth course! 🙂 I get how to send the content upgrade but my question is if I need to create a NEW list every single time I do a content upgrade! I tried using the same overall list of “bonus content” but it sends out the most recent one even if you subscribe for a freebie on an older post.
Does what I’m saying make sense? haha It’s hard to explain. But is there any free and still easy for the reader, way to do this? Thanks in advance! You are literally my blogging angel/cheerleader! haha
Hi Lyndie! Yes, you would want to set up a new list each time. This way you keep them separate and have the correct upgrade going out.
Have you already done the month trial on Board booster? Pinfinite Growth comes with a free month of 3000 pins!
Hi Melissa, 2 months ago, I wrote on this post saying thank you so much for this walk through with Mail Chimp. I followed your step by step video and it helped me so much. Well, I am happy to say that I finally relaunched my website 3 days ago AND I completed my free video course by following your Info Product series. Thanks a million! I appreciate all you do here and I once again wish you the best on success for 2016!

This is the best comment ever! Thanks for following up with your progress and congrats on relaunching 🙂
Hello Melissa!
Can you advice how you created the sign up form right below your article
“Join 15,000+ subscribers and receive access to
OUR LIBRARY OF FREE E-BOOKS + WORKSHEETS FOR BLOGGERS”
This is what i’m looking for, but aren’t able to achieve.
Many thanks!
MELYSSA THIS VIDEO IS FREAKING AWESOME. I signed up for Mailchimp TODAY (after 6+ months of having a blog) and felt so intimidated. I know newsletters are so important but it was all so intimidating. This took all the stress out of it. Thank you thank you thank you.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR POSTS! Melyssa you rock! I have no idea what I would be doing with my blog if I didn’t find your content on Pinterest. I’ve learned so much from your wealth of quality content 🙂

Hi Melissa- Thanks so much for this post that Im just now discovering! Ive used MailChimp for a while but it never made sense for more intricate tasks like automating emails, etc. Ive resorted to creating multiple lists for the different opt-ins. The problem now is having all the blog subscribers on multiple lists, will I neeed to send the campaigns to each each list individually? AND is it a good practice to consolidate these lists in the future? So many questions 😛
You mentioned earlier you switched to Infusionsoft, any recommendations why you prefer it?
Again thank you for the aweome content, and making it easier to be a girlboss these days!!

Oh my goodness, I was literally struggling with MailChimp and setting up my first campaign, until I found this post! Now I’m all set to go, lead magnet and all! Thank you sooooo much 🙂
THANK YOU! This was so, so helpful. I really appreciate the video in addition to the written steps. I’m excited to start building my e-mail list and put MailChimp to use.
Can’t wait for you to get started! Thanks for commenting Alicia 🙂
Amazing!!! WOW! You made Mailchimp “stupid easy™!” lol. Wish I would have found this earlier. The video was perfect! I use Mailerlite for now because I couldn’t stand the layout of Mailchimp and just felt like I couldn’t connect with it. Seeing this now, makes so much more sense. Thank you!
Thanks so much, Ed! If you decide to move back to Mailchimp, I hope it works better for you 🙂
Thank you, Melyssa! This was very helpful. Your MailChimp tutorial was so good that it consumed all of my Saturday evening! In fact, so much of your content is so helpful that I’ve spent many Saturday evenings on your site as I prepare for the launch of my blog, Real & Ideal, on May 2nd. Love learning from you!
Aw, this makes my day! Thank you so much Gianelle <3
You are just the best Melyssa! You are so talented and all your posts truly feel so personal and show that you love what you do. The more I get into blogging (I’m at total newbie), the more I realize how rare that is and how talented you truly are!! You are a big part of what gave me the courage to actually think I could launch a blog on my own.
Also, I’m not sure when you made the switch but it must be recently that you switched your name to http://www.melyssagriffin.com and I just want to say congrats. You deserve all the credit you can get and more. Thank you again for all you do and easing the confusion/ overwhelming state that comes as a beginner in this blogging world.
Sincerely,
Leah

Hey Leah! Aw, you seriously just made my day. Thank you so much for your sweet comments! The new site actually just went live yesterday, and I am so excited it’s finally live to share with everyone! Congrats on starting to blog. I can’t wait to see what you create!
Thank you so much! Congrats again.
I have one question for you. I am stuck about halfway through your tutorial. I don’t want to send out a newsletter quite yet, but I do want a subscription box on my blog and I want the “final welcome e-mail” to be sent once they subscribe with my lead magnet linked in it. I’ve got all that. How do I get the beautiful subscription box I made in mailchimp on to one of my posts, so that viewers can sign up there and then receive the e-mail after that? Does this make sense?
THANK YOU so much in advance!
In Mailchimp you can create a form to embed in your blog post!
Thanks for de-mystifying MailChimp! It would be good to close-the-loop and find out how to include the sign-up form on your blog / website. Do you have a tutorial for that too?!
Hi Blazenka! I don’t have a tutorial for that but here’s a guide straight from MailChimp on how to do that: http://kb.mailchimp.com/lists/signup-forms/add-a-signup-form-to-your-website
Thanks, Melyssa. The video helped erase some of the trepidation. With no experience, I’m taking over the MailChimp account from someone else. Yikes! (But not so loud now that you’ve given me some basics.)
Yay! I’m so glad this post was helpful for you! Best of luck my friend 🙂
Love this! Thank you so much for sharing!
Hey Stephanie! I’m so glad you liked the post. Thanks for letting me know 🙂
You know coming from Aweber, moving to MailChimp was a pain in the tuchy learning this tool. But hey, we should never stop learning…Thanks for your tut…
That’s the spirit! Transferring to a new platform is always such a pain but you learn a TON in the process. Good luck with everything, Luis 🙂
Thanks for this video! I’ve actually been using Mailchimp for a while, and I still learned some new things. One thing i’d add would be to always send a test email before sending a campaign, so you can look for things like non-functioning links.
That is an awesome tip about sending a test to yourself. Thanks so much for sharing that, Cathy 🙂
I’m at a loss as to how to “post” on website, Blog and FB/pinterest the “graphic” that takes people to the freebie? Am I just being dense?
Each platform has its own way of posting an image and sending readers to your opt-in/landing pages. You’ll either need to include links in the descriptions or hyperlink your images. For blog posts for example:
1. Create an image with a call-to-action on it
2. Add the image into your post
3. Hyperlink the image to your opt-in/landing page
I hope that helps! 🙂
So if I’m using Mailchimp and Wix I would insert a Canva graphic with a link to the Mailchimp signup form?
This tutorial was AWESOME! What I learned in 30 minutes would have taken me days to figure out on my own. You rock Melyssa!!
YAY! I’m so glad this tutorial was so helpful for you! Keep rockin’ it, Ayanna 😀
Hi Melyssa, this was a great tutorial for a newbie! Thank you so much. I have one question. For my next newsletter “campaign” do I have to create it from scratch or can I copy the previous one (all the formatting, etc..) and just update the text? If so, how would I do this? Thanks a ton!
This is exactly what I have been looking for!!! Thank you so much!!
Woohoo! I’m so glad this was helpful for you! 😀
Hello, do I need a bog or website to join Mailchimp?
Yep, you sure do! 🙂
Thank you so much for this video. It is just what I needed. I am just starting my blog and getting about 10 posts done before I launch and invite people. I signed up for Mailchimp yesterday and had no clue what to do on it. I am not a “techy” person so this is just what I needed and now you have a new follower. There are a lot of videos or written tutorials out there that they speak geek and I don’t speak geek. I speak “duh what?…..” LOL. So thanks for making it simple. I will be referring back to this video a lot. One dumb question…..once you design and create your “welcome to my email list email” that will just automatically send out every time someone signs up…right? There is nothing I need to do after creating the welcome email? Also, If I include a PDF as a freebie in my email the video said to upload it in my blog, but they wouldn’t everyone be able to see it. I want it to just be viewed by subscribers. Can it just be added like an attachment as in any other email you would send?
Yay! I’m so glad this post was helpful for you, Michelle!
If you set your welcome email to send immediately after someone subscribes to your list, then you’re good to go. This automation is a paid feature with MailChimp though so make sure you’re on the right plan.
In regards to including a PDF, you want to upload it to your blog in the “Media” section (if you’re on WordPress) so that it can generate a link for you. You can then include this link in your welcome emails only so that it’s not viewable by the public.
I hope that helps and best of luck to you! 🙂
Oh ok. So if I am on the Free basic plan for Mailchimp and people subscribe am I outta luck with sending a welcome email? I am trying to keep costs for this really low since I am new and I haven’t even launched my site yet. Even though I am new I am working on a ebook or course. I am not sure which to do. A course seems so intimidating and I feel like maybe the book would lead into a course. IDK. My brain is about to explode with all the information I am learning. Is it too early for wine? LOL
It’s never too early for wine!
You’re correct about the welcome email. You cannot send automatic emails if you only have the free plan so you’ll have to do it manually for now until you can upgrade.
In regards to whether you should create a course or an ebook, that’s completely up to you and how much content you plan on sharing. They each have their pros and cons but I prefer to teach via online courses. Good luck! 🙂
Hi, thanks for the great tutorial . Here is also a great Mailchimp video tutorial online for beginners: https://www.udemy.com/mailchimp-tutorial-videos/
Hi Melyssa! Thank you once again, I needed this tutorial..I was overwhelmed with the mailing list. I have a question… How do I add opt-ins to blog posts? Is this a service I need to pay for? (which is fine) Thanks for all you do!
I’m so glad this was helpful for you, Katie! In regards to adding opt-ins to your blog posts, MailChimp actually has HTML codes for opt-in forms that you can embed right into your posts. You can also use a 3rd party software, such as LeadPages, to do this as well.
Good luck and please keep me posted on your progress! 🙂
You have NO idea how much this helped me. Thank you SO SO SO MUCH!
Yay! I’m so happy this was helpful for you, Alaina! Best of luck to you and please keep me posted on your progress. 😀
Hi Melyssa, thanks and great tutorial. It was really helpful. Quick question, I changed my address to my PO box, but my address is still showing up. Do you have any idea how to fix that?
Okay, never mind that! haha! I just figured it out. However, I’m not receiving an email when I test sign up. Do you know why that could be?
Hi Ruth! Without knowing what email service provider you’re using, I’m not sure how to guide you. I would definitely recommend contacting the customer support of the company though for the best assistance. 🙂
I have come back to this guide over and over again! Thank you!!
I’m so glad to hear that, Julie! Best of luck to you. 🙂
Hey! So I got one question. I will be creating a list that when people subscribe to it, they will receive new newsletters every Monday. Now, if I create my first Campaign of lets say next weeks Monday and on Tuesday people subscribe to my list, if I create the second newsletter of the Second monday, will those people be subscribing to my first Campaign or for my second campaign? I dont know if im explaining myself but I am like super stressed trying to understand Mailchimp even though you were amazing explaining!! I just want people, even if they subscribe 10 weeks later after I started this mission to post a newsletter every monday, to at least receive that weeks newsletter rather than receiving all the other 10 monday newsletter. Makes sense?
Do i need to upgrade to automation?
Hi Coraly! If you don’t want new subscribers to receive your old newsletters, you can simply schedule your newsletters as broadcasts that go out on Mondays. 🙂
How can I do that? Btw i really wanna say THANK YOU for being so awesome. I find everything I need in this page!
You can follow this guide if this is your first time setting up a campaign:
http://kb.mailchimp.com/campaigns/ways-to-build/getting-started-with-campaigns
Hi Melissa! I hope that you are doing well. I have a quick question in regards to the address. I recently discovered viabox a company that gives you a free physical mail box. They are usually used for shipping packages, but you can fill out a usps form to have them accept usps mail. You pay when they have to ship items. Have you heard of this service before? It kinda seems to good to be true…
Interesting! I’ve never heard of them but if you try them out, please let me know what your experience is like. I’d be curious to know more!
Hi Melyssa 🙂
Just came here to say THANK YOU for everything that you share with us. I’ve been a part The Nectar Collective for some time now and you resources are all I ever use when it comes to building my brand or managing my website, even when I need some productivity and motivational tips! This tutorial helped me more than you can imagine, I kicked MailChimps a** and I thank you once again for being the queen of inter-web!
That is SO incredibly kind of you to write me this message, Stella! I’m so glad and grateful to be a part of your online business journey. Please keep me posted on all of your progress. 🙂
HELP!! SOS!!! I currently have my blog set up through Wix.com. I was able to use their version of an opt-in form to get subscribers. They have an app called ShoutOut that allows you to send your subscribers welcome e-mails and such, but I have yet to figure out the whole newsletter thing. I decided to try Mail Chimp and when I tried embedding my form on to my blog, it wouldn’t work! It would show up in my editor but not on my actual blog simply because the link to my form wasn’t an HTTPS link. Does ANYONE know how I can fix this?!
Hi Bianca. I’m not very familiar with Wix but if you ask for help in our private FB community, Im sure you will find the answers you need. Good luck! 🙂

Melissa!! Thank you for posting this guide!! I have a question for you. I am days away from the launch of my new website, katiejeannephotography.com when a potential client visits my website before Jan 31st (launch date) they have the option to submit their name and email to have their name thrown in a hat for a FREE session with me. Now, once they submit their name it just ends up on my wordpress list. How do I send these sweet poeple who have signed up a follow up email saying they are entered and the option to opt-in or opt out of all future emails from me?
How exciting! There are a handful of “launching soon” plugins you can use just to collect names and emails before you launch. Once you integrate it with MailChimp (or whichever email service provider you prefer), any names and emails entered here will be on your email list. You can then set up an automated follow up email with the option to opt-out if they choose. Good luck! 🙂
I just set up a list for my website and my Etsy shop. I could not have done this without you. Thanks so much Melyssa. Mailchimp should be aspire to be as good as you when it comes to explaining the little things. You are such a huge help!!!! Thanks again.
That’s so kind of you, Amy! Thanks so much for taking the time to write such a nice comment. 🙂
Best of luck with everything and please keep me posted on your progress!
Thank you for your help! I was literally hiding from my child so I could finish watching this video, haha! Question, can campaigns be edited once its submitted?
Yep they sure can! 🙂
THIS WAS AWESOME! I’m so happy you posted this walkthrough. Thank you so much. Life saver .:)
Yay! I’m so glad this was helpful for you, Eddie. 🙂
How can I segment my list/subscribe contacts (and then have them be able to manage their own settings) to multiple newsletters? We are a post-secondary institution, and want to be able to “tag” a contact in multiple ways (ie alumni, geographically, program/degree, events attended). Thanks!
Hi Suzanne! I’m not sure if MailChimp is able to handle all of your tagging and segmenting needs so I would recommend looking into ConvertKit as they have all of those capabilities and make it really easy to setup. 🙂
Hi Melissa,
That was such a helpful tutorial. I just have a question. I am doing a webinar so when people register for it, I want to be able to send them and email with the details in it, so, when setting up the auto responder email, if I send to ‘whole list’, will the people that have already registered for the webinar receive the same email each time someone registers? Do you have a tutorial for setting up automations? Thanks in advance xxx
Hey Robyn! To segment your list like that, you’ll need to “tag” the webinar registrants and then guide them down an email sequence just for people with that tag. I’m actually not sure if MailChimp has that capability since I haven’t used them in awhile so I would recommend getting in touch with their customer service. Good luck!
Hi, is it with mailchimp that we need double opt-in? (to confirm for subscription)
I see you know and like mailchimp, but do you know much about ConvertKit?
Thanks
Hi Wendy! You should have the option to either do double opt-in or single opt-in with both platforms. 🙂
Thanks for the awesome tutorial! It really simplified everything for me. My question is about sending a lead magnet. You showed how to embed a link to content on the website. I would like to give readers something exclusive that can’t be found on the website by just anyone. Is there an option to just attach a PDF right there in the new subscriber email?
This is definitely possible! You can simply include attachments in your emails or password protect the PDFs you are linking to. Good luck! 🙂
This was extremely helpful! Thank you so much! 🙂 xoxo
I’m so glad this was helpful for you, Rebecca! 🙂
I didn’t see anywhere in your tutorial where you get the code for putting the sign up form on your website?
Hi there, Maureen! I hope this link points you in the right direction for creating your sign-up form! There are a few steps involved, but very doable! http://kb.mailchimp.com/lists/signup-forms/add-a-pop-up-signup-form-to-your-website
Hello to The Amazing Melyssa! Can you please tell me how to “test” Newsletter Email before it gets sent out to all 1000 people in my Contacts? (just send it to myself first, then add all the rest of the contacts?) Also, where do I find a “Newsletter Link” that I can add to my website so it shows up under my “Newsletters” tab? Thank you in advance, I love how you’re helping people understand ever-changing technology!
Hi there! 🙂 There is a Preview/Test Email option so you can super easily test campaigns before sending them to your full list! Click here to read this tutorial (I hope you find it helpful) http://kb.mailchimp.com/campaigns/previews-and-tests/preview-and-test-your-email-campaign
Thank you so much for such a great post. I don’t have any program for magnet. I am total new guy in mail chimp. Can you guide me?
Thank you for the kind words, Ajay! This tutorial may guide you in the right direction for setting up a lead magnet that delivers automatically: http://kb.mailchimp.com/automation/add-an-automation
I personally use LeadPages (which is a paid tool), but it takes the guesswork out of everything. This program works in conjunction with an email list, so you would still keep Mailchimp (or another email software), and integrate this with it. Here’s a blog I wrote about LeadPages and why I love it 🙂
https://melyssagriffin.com/what-is-leadpages/
Hi Melyssa, I fortunately stumbled upon your blog a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve been addicted to it everyday since. I’m still in the planning stages of my own blog. I have two questions. 1) Do you still recommend Mailchimp after 2,000 subscribers? I notice that their pricing gets pretty expensive. 2) Does the Mailchimp company or your subscribers ever actually mail you anything to your P.O. Box address? If not, could I just use my work address or a relative’s P.O. Box as the listed address?
Awesome, Reese 🙂 So happy that you found me! I actually recommend migrating to a more robust program once you’ve surpassed 2,000 subscribers. ConvertKit is a popular, intermediate option that allows you to do a lot of fun stuff with segmenting and funnels. If you’re just starting out and your list is small (and maybe a ways away from hitting 2,000), Mailchimp is a great place to start) 🙂 I think you can use any address you like for the mailing address, as long as it’s a valid address.
Thanks for this Melyssa, it was very helpful. I do have a question though, so once I set up a list, do I have to create a new campaign every time I want to send them a new newsletter? I would like to send out something every two weeks. Also, when someone subscribes to one of my lists, does mailchimp automatically send them the campaign or do I have to set that up in automation? I know these questions are probably silly, but I am so not tech savvy and appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks again 🙂
Hi Shannon! 🙂 Thank you for reading! When someone subscribes to one of your lists, there is likely a confirmation email being generated from Mailchimp, and you should be able to customize this. I recommend testing everything using a personal email to see what it looks like as a new subscriber!
Thanks, Melyssa! This was incredibly helpful 🙂
Happy to hear this, Meredith 🙂 Good luck with your email list!
Thank you Melyssa for this guide. I signed up to Mailchimp ages ago and tried to start a campaign but found it overly complicated with so many options and just gave up. Thanks for making it much simpler. I now have a newsletter to send to people! 😀
This makes my heart happy, Tina! 🙂 Thank you for sharing your win here 🙂
Thank you, Melyssa. Great guide. And it’s great to see so much positive feedback from your community. I just happily signed up to your email list. I’ve been using Mailchimp for a year now and I still struggle with some basics. Please, please, please help me with this dilema.
-I have one list.
-I have multiple places where to sign up (forms on blog posts, Subscription Page, etc.)
-I now have a sweet lead magnet (a free 4-day mini-course, video format).
-THE PROBLEM: People who are already on the list are not getting the freebee course. On basic forms, they plug in their email and name followed by a whole lot of nothing else happening. On the subscription page, they get an error message saying, “hey this email already exists, click here to update preferences” (see screen shot).
-MY QUESTION: Am I doing it wrong? It would be easiest to create a new list, but redundancy is rarely the appropriate solution and would create a mess later. Is there a better way to go about an opt in form?
Thank you. Sorry for the lengthy post. Keep up the great work.
https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/3c776730daef19762c40e408de193f50c4c8e816fda51a03540c86982594c455.png
Hi Pavan! I’m so sorry to hear about this. It’s great that you’re creating quality content that’s encouraging new sign-ups to your list. I’d recommend referring to Mailchimp’s Support Team, as they’ll best be able to help you out! Good luck 🙂
I want my email campaign to qualify the recipients based on their clicks and survey participation. Then automatically follow up with them. I want 2 or 3 interactions and engagements. Now I manually go and see who’s opened and clicked. And perhaps if I have time which I often don’t I’ll follow up with them.
AutoPilot does this automatically.
But it not easy to set up and their customer service is limited.
I’ve been using Mailchimp on numerous campaigns but I want it do what AutoPilot does since I’m already invested in Mailchimp.
So does it do it?
Hi Michael! I am not sure about AutoPilot, but I recommend checking in with Mailchimp’s Support Team to see if they can help you out! 🙂
I got stuck where we are supposed to link our PDF url to the final welcome email? How do i do if i am supposedly offering it via email and thats why people subscribe because its obviously not available on my website. If it were, people wouldn’t need to subscribe. So what url goes there exactly?
Hi Elena! You can host your opt-in using any cloud storage provider (like Dropbox, Amazon) or your web host. You’ll upload it there, and then pop that in as your URL! 🙂 I hope that makes sense.
Dear Melyssa, Thankyou for such an informative post. I love your website and your personal vibe :)). Am a new blogger and getting used to all the ‘bloggy’ stuff 🙂 and your blog is such a heaven sent! Thankyou. One query regarding MailChimp pls. I am an Indian and currently based in India. So do I also need to provide a physical address in my email newsletters as is mandatory for people in the USA by law? Or can I skip the physical address part as I’m not based in USA? My subscribers may be based outside of India though! Look forward to your reply. Love and Rgds.
Hi, RR 🙂 Thank you for your sweet words. I am not sure what the policy is in India – I would suggest doing some research around that. I know in the USA it is a law, so I have a ‘mailbox’ address that I put in the footer of each message.
Thank you for the super informative post. 🙂 I’m new at using mailchimps and your video helped me understand the steps needed for sending a newsletter.
Yay, I love hearing that, Deebi! 🙂 Best of luck in growing your email list.
Hello! Thanks for the great info, but I still have some questions. These may be dumb questions, but I have no idea what I am doing so here goes…
How are people signing up for my newsletter? Like how or when do they get the chance to do this? Am I supposed to send out invites to people who comment on my website?
Next question- In the video you showed us making a Here is your first newsletter type of post. Am I understanding correctly that in order to send a “Welcome” email I would have to be in the automated (paid) section, otherwise as people sign up they will just receive whatever new newsletter I am sending out? If I do a once a month newsletter could a person end up waiting a couple weeks after subscribing to get anything? I am confused, obviously.
Is the free Mailchimp you showed above automatically a double opt in or do we have to select that somewhere?
Last question- If we did want or need the automated (paid) version, would you still recommend mailchimp verses other similar services since it won’t be free anymore?
Sorry for all the questions. I got my PO Box and I am excited to get this set up, but I don’t have “subscribers” yet because I had nothing to subscribe to.
Thanks,
Jamie
lovethehotsauce.com
Hi Jamie! I’ll do my best to break some of this down 🙂 People will ‘opt in’ to your newsletter using opt-in forms that you’ll create on Mailchimp. These are easy to create and they’ll give you copy/paste codes so you can insert them in different locations of your website. I recommend placing opt-in forms on your sidebar and within most (if not all) of your blog posts. Your about page is another great place to position an opt-in form.
In order to send an automated welcome email, yes, you could go the automation route and create this, or you can edit your ‘confirmation email’ that Mailchimp sends out when a new subscriber registers.
If you are looking for a paid tool, I actually recommend using a more robust email provider, like ConvertKit, ActiveCampaign, or Infusionsoft. Infusionsoft is what I use (though it’s the most expensive and complex of the 3).
Hey there Melyssa, the tutorial was great thank you! I am having a hard time figuring out how to authenticate my domain in mail chimp. So confusing, do you know where I can figure out how to do this correctly?
You’re welcome, Jayne! 🙂 Does this article help at all? It appears to be a tutorial on how to set this up: https://kb.mailchimp.com/accounts/email-authentication/set-up-custom-domain-authentication-dkim-and-spf
Thanks, Melyssa!
Thank you Melyssa, you’ve been a life saver. One thing I’m not quite sure of is if I create a custom sign-in, how can I embed it in my website? Or can I only use the EMBEDDED form to embed a sign-in generic form?
I am new to ALL of this. Yes I do use Instagram but not regularly. I do though want to link that to my personal FB, which it is, invite folks to get to my art website and other art FB page. This said. My art website already has a blog page. If I upload images to my portfolio they then can get to my blog. I am supposed to get permission of the folks who subscribe to my newsletter/blog. I only have like 7 or 11 on that. I need to understand how to create a following/followers for Instagram and then how to create one of those Freebies buttons links so that I can start to get interested folks looking more at my art images and offerings … they in turn get an art sticker and a chance to win an original art journal ets., can anyone help. thankS
Hi Rita! Some of my favorite strategies for growing an Instagram can be found here: https://melyssagriffin.com/grow-your-instagram-followers/
To get a freebie created, this is something you can create using Microsoft Word, Canva, or anything that allows you to convert a document into a PDF 🙂 Then you can set it up inside of your email marketing platform. I have some content about this here: https://melyssagriffin.com/resource-library-tutorial/
Good luck 🙂
Melyssa, thank you for a great tutorial. Your article helped me get started, but I need some more help. Mailchimp only helps if you are paying and I can’t pay until I start bringing in some money. Do you know of a forum or support group for mailchimp users? My sign up form is working. The confirmation is sent out, the person is added to my list, but my first email that is set to go out immediately isn’t showing up in their mailbox. Any suggestions? Thanks, Vince
Hi Vince, I recommend searching on Facebook to see if there is a Facebook Group for Mailchimp users (I’m guessing there is one!) You also want to make sure in your automation that you set the ‘trigger’ for when that email will be delivered. You should have full control over that (you could choose for it to be sent immediately upon sign-up, to wait 1 day, etc.). I’d look into this when editing your automation options. I hope this helps for starters 🙂
I searched and found MailChimp Answers on Facebook. Thanks.
HELP! My subscribers are not showing up on Mailchimp! My test indicates that the subscribers are receiving their newsletter, but their names are not showing up (or registering statistically) as subscribers. Seems so simple, but I just want to see ONE COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF SUBSCRIBERS… I’m about to quit my mailchimp account (after I pull every single hair out of my head…)
Melyssa, I’ll be a forever fan and subscriber of yours if you can help me with this!
Oh no, Emily! I am so sorry that this is happening. That doesn’t seem right to me. Have you contacted Mailchimp’s customer support team? You should be able to view your entire list, and even export them if you choose to. Good luck and keep me posted!
So my mailchimp popup isn’t showing up on wordpress anymore? Any idea how to fix it? I’m not sure how to fix it.
Oh no, Britt. I am sorry to hear this and am not sure why this might be happening. I suggest reaching out to Mailchimp’s tech support team to see if they can assist you 🙂
How do I change the subject of my welcome email? Thanks for the great tutorial. I feel like I am finally getting somewhere with this. All the other tutorials were jumping ahead to creating a newsletter but this showed me how to start with the subscription email and then the welcome email. Now I am just stuck at changing the subject of that welcome email.
Hi there. 🙂 So happy to hear you’re making progress on your welcome sequence! It has been awhile since I’ve used Mailchimp. I suggest reaching out to Mailchimp’s tech support team to see if they can assist you 🙂
TU for this tutorial I’ve been stymied by Mailchimp for some time now. I created a popup>got a couple of subscribers months ago. Created 2 campaigns>tested and NOTHING 30+ days ago, followed your set up as outlined created a campaign>tested and NOTHING about 3 hours in now. Does the “test your campaign work for anyone out there?”. Nothing in their list of gotcha’s is a problem. So, I’m curious if anyone ever gets this feature to actually work. I’ve sent to 2 different emails also.
GAHHH! Im so frustrated and hope you can help! I followed your instructions perfectly and came up with not only a beautiful general form, but an awesome lead magnet to add to it. However, how in the heck do I get the GENERAL (not embedded) form onto wordpress? I am running Genesis. Please help! I don’t want all my work to be for nothing!
Oh shoot, I’m so sorry to hear you’re having trouble, Keri. It has been a long time since I’ve used Mailchimp. I recommend reaching out to their customer support team or googling your issue inside of YouTube, to see if someone has an easy-to-follow video tutorial. Good luck! 🙂
Did you get an answer Keri? This is exactly what I want to do – just spent an hour going in circles!! (The actual video above from you was awesome though, Melyssa!)
You’re a star! This was immensely helpful. Thank you!
You’re welcome. Good luck! 🙂
Melyssa, THANK YOU – this is brilliant free content and a big step missed in many ‘how to blog for profit’ courses. Really grateful you took the time to share this in a light and accessible way. I’ve been stuck for a while, now I’m unstuck 😉 No doubt I’ll hit a hurdle (MailChimp support here we come…) but thanks a heap for getting me out of the blocks!
You are so welcome, Ella! 🙂 Woohoo! Glad to hear the tutorial helped you get started.
I have more followers than I do email followers, how do I import those to mailchimp?
Hi there 🙂 You have to make sure your followers have opted in to receive your emails, so I would encourage them to sign up using an opt-in form, to try and collect some of them that way. It’s technically against the law to import subscribers who haven’t signed up for your list. Good luck!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, Melyssa! I needed it since I’m definitely new to the art of building an email list. I can’t wait to delve into the process.
Awesome, Lizzie! 🙂 Good luck with everything, and keep me posted on your progress.
