Hi friends! I figure it’s time for a little monthly check-in, so that we can catch up and chat over some virtual coffee. You down? Here are nine things I’ve been pondering, feeling, doing, being, and living lately. What have you been up to these days?

1. I feel like I am constantly looking for ways to grow and improve just about everything, from who I am to what my apartment looks like. I like this about myself for the most part, but having this mindset can be kind of exhausting. I actually have a tattoo that says, “like a root growing–” which is both a line from my favorite poem and a reflection on my desire to always grow as a person. I like that I’m not keen to settling, but sometimes I wish I could just be happy with less. Do you ever feel this way?

2. Do you have a favorite holiday? Mine is Halloween! To be honest, I’m not entirely sure why I love Halloween so much. Maybe it’s because it feels so representative of Autumn (my favorite season) or because I adore the decorations and seeing little kids in costumes. Or it could be the memories I have of bringing home a pillowcase of candy each year (until I was, like, 15) and eating it for months on end. Or maaaybe it’s because I’ve seen Hocus Pocus enough times to recite it by heart? I can’t really say, but thinking about Halloween just feels like home for some reason. It gives me this warm, happy feeling, unlike any other holiday. My grandma’s birthday was on Halloween, so that might have a little somethin’ to do with it, too. 🙂

3. Last week I opened up the blog to contributors and have been blown away by your response and applications! I’m not too sure how I’m going to pick a teeny handful of people out of everyone who applied — y’all are making this difficult! 😉 There’s still time to apply if you’re interested…all the details are right here. I’m really stoked to eventually have a mini team of people writing here. And I do hope to create that “team vibe.” I’ve noticed through the various jobs or positions I’ve had throughout my life that I love — absolutely LOVE — taking care of people. I know this contributor position will be a small job for whoever gets it, but I hope I can take care of them in some meaningful way. I’m pretty damn excited. 🙂

4. If you subscribe to my newsletter, you probably already saw those photos of me up there (a testament to how few photos I have of myself…we gotta use repeats!). I got a couple questions about the big ol’ glasses I’m wearing, which were sent to me from a sweet little company called Firmoo. The glasses are good quality and they have a bunch of styles to choose from. They also have a promo where you can get free glasses if you pay for the lenses. In case you want to be a hipster like me. *grin*

5. I’m going to Catalina Island next weekend! Have you heard of it? It’s a tiny island off the coast of California. I went there once a looong time ago with my family, so it will be neat to see what I remember. Cars are restricted on the island, so everyone gets around in golf carts. Paul and I are inordinately excited about this. Who wouldn’t want to cruise around in a golf cart?

6. Can we just marvel at the cuteness of Monja? His 2nd birthday is coming up on October 14th! What should we do to celebrate? I was thinking of going camping for one night at a local park. He’s never been camping, but cuddling with Monja in a tent sounds oddly adorable and fun. You can see what we did for his first birthday here. Also, random, but very necessary side note: every night, Monja lays next to me on my bed. He even uses the pillow on his own accord. I think it’s the cutest thing, like he’s my furry little human who just wants good neck support and eight hours of sleep.

7. Sometimes I forget how young I actually am. When I glance around the blogging and online world, it can be easy to feel behind when so many others are doing incredible things — writing books, creating product lines, hosting huge events, etc. But then I remind myself that I’m only 25, my blog is less than two years old, and I’ve been running my own business for only 11 months full-time. It’s easy for me to get wrapped into everything and forget that in many ways, I’m still a newbie. I wonder what I’ll be doing a year or five from now. I sincerely hope it has everything to do with the things I’m doing now, I can tell you that much!

8. I’ve been doing a lot of blog consultations and I wish I could accurately convey just how much I love them. Since I work at home alone most days, I don’t always get to chat with other people, so having this new outlet to connect with someone as passionate about blogging as I am has been such a fun, neat adventure. You know that feeling when you’re out and someone asks you a simple question, like “excuse me, do you know how to get to 4th street?” and you’re like “HECK YEAH I DO.” And then you give them directions and they’re super thankful because they’ve been lost for ages and you feel on top of the world because you were able to use all that bundled-up knowledge in your head to actually help someone and…well, blog consultations are kind of like that. 🙂

9. I’ve been wanting to mix up my style more lately. I feel like I have a LOT of clothes and wear about 15% of them. I think it’s time to get rid of things and find some new staples! I actually tried out StitchFix, hoping it would be my style savior, but didn’t like anything that I was sent, so I’m not sure I’d use it again. I love the things on my Pinterest style board, so I might start there! How would you describe your style?

Let’s catch up! What’s been on your mind lately?

  1. Samsam says:

I absolutely feel like I’m trying to improve just about everything! While it’s good to want to be better and strive for the best, I constantly have to remind myself that everything can’t happen all at once. It’s all about patience and determination!
I love Halloween, too! As much as I enjoy Christmas, Halloween has always been one of my favorites – the colors, the traditions, the excitement…I just love it 🙂
    ~ Samantha

  2. Simone says:

#1 – YES. I sometimes get overwhelmed by all of the things I’m interested in and want to learn. It’s so hard to pick just one to focus on – and hard to remember that I’m not a complete beginner in everything!

Also, #7. I’m 24 and feel the same way (though I’m not running my own business – yet!). So excited to see what the next few years will bring – and really important not to get too ahead of myself, either, and just enjoy the process 🙂

Fall’s my favorite season, too! 🙂

    • Oh my gosh YES, isn’t it hard to pick one thing? I LOVEE ideas and doing ALL the things, but then I feel like I’ve spread myself too thin and I’m nowhere. Maybe this is what our 20s are supposed to be like? Trying everything and finding things we love? I hope so!

  3. Johanna says:

Your number 7 is kind of what I’m going through atm. I will be 25 in 16 days (gaaaah), and for some reason, that number is totally freaking me out. Like, I always thought that at 25, I’d have a good job, be in a serious relationship, and just.. further than where I am now. On the other hand, so much life still waiting to be lived! I don’t know, I’m in a weird head space at the moment.
But I DID do a whole series on how to figure out your style, maybe that could help you find some ideas? Just search for “fashion” on the right hand side, and it should all pop up 🙂
    Have a lovely weekend! xx

    • I totally know that feeling! Especially in the blogging world, I feel like almost everyone, regardless of age, is married, owns their own home, and has a rad job! It’s hard to think straight in that environment sometimes. But I think both of our notions about where we should be were probably created by two younger gals who had no idea what being 25 was really like. haha! I hope you have a wonderful birthday, by the way! 🙂

  4. Kasey Decker says:

I really dig those glasses! I’ve never heard of Firmoo? but it has to be better than what I’m paying for frames at the eye doctor!

  5. Liz says:

Wishing you a very happy holiday! I love the sound of a tiny island! how cute to travel buy golf buggy. Hopefully it instils a quieter pace of life for a bit! I feel you on the age thing, I turned 28 this year and it’s hard to not compare. Instead I try to use that comparison as inspiration. Have a lovely weekend xx

  6. Zoe says:

I love this post! And virtual coffee! And real coffee. Anyway, all of these points are so applicable to where I’m at right now. Everything from a constant need to improve (which I’m trying to attribute to the season-autumn always feels like I’ve hit the refresh button) to forgetting how young I am. It’s so easy to get caught up in just, everything. I’m not running a business by any means, but I often forget to take time just to do 20-something things, like skip class because I can or go out for drinks on a week night.

    The What’s In Between

  7. I’ve always loved Halloween, especially when I was younger but now I don’t do much for it anymore. I’m going to be in London for Halloween this year… and I’m trying to think of a way to make it super fun (my dad’s visiting me)! Thanksgiving is my personal favorite, and I really want to make a nice Thanksgiving meal for my host family and my friends, so we’ll see! I just turned 21, and I feel like I’m super behind on everything in my life… like somehow I need to be amazing (whatever that means) and I can’t seem to figure out how! It’s a strange mindplace to be in.

    • It IS a strange mindplace, and one I can definitely relate to. I think we have more time than we think. 🙂 The other day, someone left a comment for me here that said something about how I’ve “lived so much” already, mainly because I lived abroad and traveled at a young age. It’s a thought I never really considered, and sometimes I felt like living abroad put me behind in certain ways. But I wanted to share that with you, because I think your experience is adding so much “life” to your…life! 🙂

And that’s amazing that you’re planning to cook your host family and friends a Thanksgiving dinner! I bet that’s something you’ll all remember for a long time. 🙂

  8. Jacqie Brooks says:

Halloween is my favourite too! I’m having trouble realizing how young I am. …I’m 21, barely. I have a breakdown on every birthday. But that’s a little irrational. I just want to do so much stuff!

    • Well, if it means anything to you, I’m 25 and still feel very young — not much different than I felt at 21 (except maybe more confident and independent :)). I totally understand how you feel about wanting to do so much stuff though! It’s crazy when the months and years fly by so quickly and there’s still an epic to-do list of things I want to do in my life. I’m pretty sure that no matter what happens, things will work out the way they should. 🙂

  9. I absolutely LOVE the reasoning behind your tattoo. I am constantly pushing myself to continue to grow. I love being able to think back about how far I’ve come. I always look forward to your pictures of Monja!! Happy Autumn and Halloween month to you and your adorable pup!

  10. Kate Gould says:

You started your blog less than two years ago?! Girl, you have already accomplished so much. I love that you continue to push yourself, just remember that the things you’ve done are still amazing.

  11. Meghan Hayes says:

I love love love reading posts like this. I get what you’re saying about settling and being happy with less, but I feel like they’re not the same sometimes. Being happy with less doesn’t mean you’re settling for less than the best. You’ve been doing some amazing stuff and I don’t feel like it’s any less awesome. It’s crazy to think about what you’ve accomplished and how young you are! Its something I have to remind myself of too.

    • You are absolutely right, Meghan! And I so appreciate those positive words of encouragement. I probably should’ve been more clear what I was talking about when I said “settling for less” and a lot of those thoughts have to do with material things — like having nice furniture or even my own house. I think you’re right though, that I probably should’ve picked a better word besides “settling” because that implies it’s bad, when really, being happy with less is totally awesome! Thanks so much for pointing that out and always being so supportive! 🙂 Have an awesome weekend.

  12. I can’t believe you only started your blog two years ago! It’s amazing how far you’ve come. Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday (because I am a hopeless romantic), but Halloween is a very very very close second!

    http://peeintothewnid.tumblr.com

  13. Ktcyril says:

Everything about all of number two. Halloween is the best. As is Hocus Pocus. As is a bag full of candy.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

  14. I’ve been having a style crisis lately!! But I’ve realized that I’m much more comfortable (and look better) in skinny pants and so I’ve been slowly changing out my work pants, etc. Next will be tackling the tops which seems like a nightmare right now!

  15. A friend and I were just talking about how it seems everyone is doing so much and we feel sooo behind! We have to remind ourselves, we’re young & there’s plenty of time! I love this post and Halloween too – it’s cozy and the movies are great!

    Alex

  16. I love this post! 🙂 What’s been going on with me? Work, work, and more work (at my 9-5) – and all I can think about is how I want to take my business to the next level. Just trying to find the time and GSD vs feeling overwhelmed some days. Hoping to refresh myself over the weekend though. Cheers to the weekend! xo

    • Oh I know how you feel about feeling a little overwhelmed! In terms of taking your business to the next level, have you considered moving your job to part time, so you have time to build it up before eventually making the leap? Maybe that would help you work on your biz while still bringing in an income. 🙂

  17. Stacia says:

I love these monthly check ins! The things you share are always so fun and relatable and it’s nice to get peeks of what’s going on around and outside of your blog. 🙂

I’ve been experimenting with my personal style recently, too. I think I’ve decided that my style has a vintage touch to it with a modern edge. I like the minimal, easy side of modern clothing, but I love the special details I feel like vintage clothing used to include. I like to try and fall somewhere in between.

    • Aw I’m glad you like these monthly check-ins! And that type of style seems SO you, especially the part about “special details.” You definitely seem like a gal who’s into the meaningful details. 🙂

Random question, but have you ever taken the Myers Briggs personality test? I am curious what you are!

  18. Aly Bubbles says:

Hey Mel, I think it’s great that you’re trying to improve yourself. I am, too. I think that sometimes we all forget how young we are. I’m 18 and I’m already feeling the stress of having to choose a lifelong career.
Also, Monja is so cute! Is he a corgi? 🙂

  19. Shaunacey says:

    love love love halloween
that pic of your dog is hilarious! so cute

  20. Oh K. says:

Have fun on your vacation! I definitely feel the young thing. And I just turned 18. It’s weird. People around me are so ambitious. So I’m like OH ARE YOU DOING A THING I WANT TO DO A THING. It’s horrible though haha.

  21. Cori says:

    Hi Mel~♪
I liked this blog post because I learned more about you 🙂
It’s great to keep trying to improve things in our lives!
And I also love Halloween~ I like the candies, decorations and moreover the costumes.
Wish you a safe and nice trip next weekend. Have fun ♥!
PS. Can’t believe I’m older than you (only 2 years :P) since I always think of you as a “senpai/せんぱい” from whom I learn many great and awesome things ♥!

  22. Eliza SJ says:

Mel! I had no idea The Nectar Collective was still such a young endeavor. Under 2 years old, really?! That gives me hope for my own blog. I was just thinking last night that since I’ve gotten back to blogging so late in the ‘game’, my blog may never develop a real audience or anything since there are so many wonderful, talented bloggers out there who’ve been at it for years already. But you give me hope that I might be able to actually reach people with my blog. Maybe I’ll really succeed at carving out my own little special place on these inter webs haha!

But really, I just love coming on here and reading your posts. Your voice is so real, down to earth and authentic and just… comfortable 🙂 So thank you!

    • I had to screenshot that comment because it just made me so happy! Also, whenever I do blog consultations, my clients often bring up that same point about wondering if there’s “space” for them in the blogging world, since there are already so many big and successful bloggers. I usually tell them that there’s space for anyone who’s passionate and hard-working enough. 🙂

  23. Megan says:

#7, I can definitely relate. Especially since I got married pretty young, I feel I connect more with people that are quite a bit older than me, and it’s hard when I start comparing where I am vs where they are. Sometimes I just have to stop and remind myself I’m only 21, and to let things happen! Also, I really enjoy your check-in posts 🙂

  24. #1: Me too! Especially now that I’m feeling more settled in my new job, but also feeling like I missed a few months of productivity while all of that was going on. I’ve been thinking of how to improve the setup of my room so that I keep it a little more organized and how to improve my blog and, as always, how to improve my fiction writing. 🙂

#9: I’ve been thinking a lot about this too lately, also thanks to the new job. It’s a lot more casual than my old job (business dress), so now that I can wear jeans and more casual clothes on a regular basis I don’t even want to pull out my old business pants. I’ve had to wear them 5+ days a week for 9 years and since I had to wear them I rarely bought anything casual, so now I’m enjoying. Of course, I still want to look nice, so I’m working on putting together cute, casual outfits. People do it everyday so I’m sure I’ll figure out too. I’m sure I’ve already been successful, I’m just not used to it anymore. 🙂 If you want inspiration on clearing things out of your wardrobe, over the summer I discovered Unfancy (http://www.un-fancy.com/) and this blog inspired me to me clear out my wardrobe. I don’t have as many clothes as I used to, but now I wear everything. As a bonus, she has an adorable whippet, but I think she features him more on her Instagram account than her blog.

I always love seeing pictures of your smiling pup. 🙂

  25. Have you ever read the blog INTO MIND? She writes extensively about developing your personal style, switching your look up seasonally, and how to rebuild a wardrobe on a budget. She’s for sure my favorite reference, especially since I’ve lately hated everything in my closet.

  26. Emma says:

Monja looks incredibly cute in that picture and I love that he shares the pillow with you. My cats used to visit us in the morning and stretch out alongside me with their bellies up in the air – it was wonderful!
And yes, you are definitely still young! I am 25 too and feel old sometimes when I see what people are doing (I work with a lot of people who are younger than me too so that doesn’t help) but actually we’re still really young!

    Emma | frillsanddoodads.com

  27. Monja is an adorable dog! Camping sounds like a fun idea or glamping… Pinterest is a good place to start, for me that is where I punk things I would buy if I were to go on a shopping spree.

  28. esther julee says:

I was thinking of applying, but I figured you have a ton of people applying. 🙂

  29. Amber Rhodes says:

How gorgeous is your dog!!! Congratulations on achieving so much…at only 25, well done!
    http://www.sweetwordsprettypictures.com

  30. Amanda Greer says:

Confession: I’ve never seen Hocus Pocus.

Also, I just found your blog via Stamp in My Passport, and am so glad I did! I really resonate with what you said in number 7. Sometimes I feel younger than I am, but then I look at where I am and what I’m doing, and I’m like, “Wow! I’m only 24!”

I’m currently living and teaching in Beijing (my 3rd year), and am a blogger as well. I’m excited to add your blog to my reader!

  31. Sneha says:

Well done on bringing your blog this far! It’s one of my favorites, and the cuteness of Monja can be quite overwhelming. 🙂 What has been on my mind? SO MANY THINGS! Mostly good things, which is great. I’m excited about a holiday in Prague. It’s in December, but given that it’s October already, it doesn’t feel so far away!

    x Sneha | http://www.snehakadaba.com

  32. Ashley says:

I can totally relate with you on feeling “behind” in life compared to others. I feel like I should be so much more along in life. I guess everyone has there own path.

  33. You are ROCKING those glasses, Mel!
