8 Ways to Brighten Your Home. Hate that dark room in your house? Wish it could be bright and pretty like all those Pinterest rooms? These 8 tips will totally turn your home's brightness around!v

With the heaps of beautifully bright homes on Pinterest, it’s easy to look around our own houses and wonder why they don’t quite compare. Dark and dingy? Yeah, sounds more like it. If you’re anything like me, and yearn for a bright, happy space, then you’ll love these tips about brightening up your home. Not only will they help you create a brighter space (even in a dark room!), but they’ll add to your decor to make it fresh, inspiring, and oh so #Pinterest ready. Want to brighten up your home? Here are eight tips to help you do just that:

1. Use white or light-colored furniture.

Wherever possible, search for white furniture, rather than dark colors. Think white bookcases, white credenzas, cream couches, and white tables! If you have dark wood floors like me, then adding an off-white rug can do wonders. I have one in my living room and it really brightens up the space. Fun fact: if you’re scared of getting it dirty, then I knocked over a full cup of coffee on mine and it came right out. No excuses! 😉

Here are a few of my favorite light-colored furniture pieces:

2. Keep tall items away from windows.

Is there a large plant, bookshelf, or other piece of furniture blocking the light in your house? Move it! I recommend putting large pieces of furniture on opposite ends of a room from where your windows are. That way, your room will receive the most natural light possible.

3. Use sheer, white curtains.

When I moved into my apartment, it came with thick, ivory curtains that made the room look a little dark and yellow-hued. Bleh. Instead, I traded them in for sheer, white curtains. Wow, what a difference that simple change made!

4. Add mirrors.

Mirrors are incredibly handy in home decor for a couple reasons. First, they will make your room appear larger. In addition to opening up your room’s space, they’ll also reflect any light coming into the room, especially if placed across from light sources, such as windows. Try adding a large mirror into your dark room to give it more space and light.

5. Paint it!

This is, perhaps, one of the most obvious (but important!) suggestions. If your room has dark colored paint, it could be giving it an overall dark feel. Paint can transform a room. Try white paint or a light grey to brighten up your space. It’s amazing what a can of white paint can do for your decor!

6. Clean!

What your house might actually need more than anything is…a good cleaning! Wipe down all of your surfaces, clean scuff marks off the walls, and dust wherever possible. Imagine how dingy a room would look if it was covered in a thin layer of dirt? Yeah, that.

7. Bright, white bulbs

Are your lamps giving off a yellow tint? It might be time to switch them out for something new. Try Bright White LED bulbs to maximize the brightness coming from your lamps. You also need more light sources in general! Try adding a table lamp to your decor to add a bit more brightness.

Here are a few of my favorite lamps:

8. Add flowers or plants

I don’t think there’s anything that really freshens up a space more than some well-placed flowers or big, leafy plants. Add plenty of plants to your decor (not just succulents — think bigger!) and you’ll literally breathe new life into your home.

  1. Whatever you do just don’t buy a white flokati rug if you have pets!!! Ack. I thought it would be so bright and lovely, but mostly it’s just impossible to clean due to the super-high pile. : Thanks for these tips, though. I really want to get some white curtains and mirrors when I move!

    • Ahh that’s too bad! I actually have two shaggy white rugs that have had coffee and my dog’s throw-up on them (LOL), and I found that they are actually good at hiding the grime because of the high pile. It just kind of blends in to where you can’t see it anymore. Maybe it depends on the rug!?

  2. Kristin says:

When you paint, too, you can get a brighter feel with an interior semigloss. A flat paint will look shades darker, even if it’s in the same tone, and will just suck up all the light. Also, if your space feels dark and doesn’t have a lot of direct sunlight, stay away from anything with ivory or yellow tones in it – it will just make everything look more yellowed. We actually have pale gray walls in our place and they look white because of the light angle. Definitely with you on the sheer white curtains!

  3. So many great tips! I especially love to use mirrors in my house.

  4. Leanne says:

Love these tips! I have a house in Portland where it can be quite dark and gloomy in the winter and I’ve been searching for ideas so that when I move in it can be bright happy and homey! THank you so so much for these tips!!

  5. Kristi Craig says:

White furniture really makes such a difference! Now I need to add more plants!

Annnd now I want to paint my entire apartment white! lol my walls are a beige color and it looks so dreary sometimes.

  7. Stacia says:

These are great tips, Melyssa! I’m always scared of white furniture, though, because we have a dark haired cat and I don’t want to constantly feel the pressure to lint roll all the things. haha

  8. Great tips! Actually on the point of mirrors, do you follow the principles of Feng Shui at all? I’m not really a follower but I’ve been doing some reading on it, particularly on how mirrors can throw off the flow of the room. Any tips to get around that?

  9. Vanessa Du says:

I open up the curtains to let the sun in during day time! These tips you have here are great. I should really add some plants and flowers.

  10. Carmen says:

Great tips! I’m all about white furniture, light colored walls and lots of natural light!! It definitely changes your mood; you feel more relaxed when you’re in this type of atmosphere. 🙂

  11. Great tips! I’m more of a darker room person with light accents, so I’ve been paying more attention to buying lighter decorations. Usually light blue for me, because I love blue. 🙂 I love all the white backdrops for photos and white rooms that I see online and on Instagram, but I’m more of a wood interior and wood backdrop person. When I was younger and lived in Wisconsin, my dad built the house that we lived in. He’s a lover of wood, too, so it was all wood paneling. I think that’s where my love of wood comes from. 🙂

  12. I love the mix of ideas 🙂 Definitely time to spruce up the living room.
