8 WordPress Plugins I Can't Live Without

If you run your blog or website on the self-hosted WordPress platform, you’re probably familiar with plugins. The ability to use plugins is one of my absolute favorite things about WordPress. In case you’re unfamiliar, WordPress plugins are pieces of software that can be used to expand the functionality of your site. They often accomplish one of two things: making your life easier or making your site awesome. I often get asked about the plugins I use on my own blog, so today I’m sharing eight of my favorite WordPress plugins. I hope they help you out!

1. CoSchedule // CoSchedule is one of my new favorites. It’s an editorial calendar and social media scheduler wrapped into one. The editorial calendar allows you to plan your posts ahead of time, which is incredibly useful in staying organized and finding a good balance and variety of content. But what sets CoSchedule apart from other editorial calendar plugins is that you also have the option to schedule social media promotions right from your post editing window. You can schedule all your social media promotions for the day in about ten minutes — so useful! CoSchedule is $10/month or $100/year, but I think this is a small fee for how much time it saves me.

2. Disqus // Disqus is by far my favorite commenting platform! I love the modern look of it and the way it promotes discussions, even between commenters. For Disqus, your visitors need only log in to their account once, and pretty much never have to enter their name, email, and website again. Having to enter these things every time a visitor wants to leave a comment is often the reason they don’t. I also like that your readers can upload a photo of themselves, which appears next to their comment. It feels easier to connect with people.

3. Gravity Forms // I use Gravity Forms for all of my contact forms and prefer it over other contact form plugins because of how customizable it is. Aside from being a professional contact form option, it also comes with tons of add-ons, such as being able to integrate it with Mailchimp, Paypal, Stripe, Freshbooks, and more. This makes Gravity Forms available for everything from simple contact forms to even order forms and opt-in boxes. You do have to pay for this one, but I think it’s well worth the price.

4. Image Resize Wizz // Want all your photos to be the same size? If you don’t, you should! It gives your blog posts a cleaner and more professional look when all your images are the same width. Image Resize Wizz allows you to select a size for your photos and it will shrink them appropriately. I don’t, however, recommend uploading gigantic photos and then shrinking them with this plugin (doing so will just slow down your site).

5. Tweetily // Tweetily is neat, because it will automatically tweet out posts from your archives every few hours. As of writing this post, TNC has almost 500 blog posts under its belt, but you’d probably never realize it since most of them are shoved waaaay back in the archives. Instead of forgetting about them, Tweetily shares them with your Twitter followers, to increase engagement on old posts.

6. Magic Action Box Pro // I found it marvelously difficult to add a Mailchimp subscription form to my site that wasn’t hideous or just really boring. That is, until I discovered Magic Action Box. MAB allows you to add opt-in forms that are easy to customize in almost every way. I’m currently using it in both my sidebar and below my posts. Quick sidenote: Since adding an opt-in form below posts, my rate of subscribers has almost tripled!

7. WordPress SEO (Yoast) // A god among plugins, my friends. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Basically, if you have great SEO, then your site will pop up higher in search results on Google, which will increase the traffic to your site. Almost 40% of my traffic comes from Google, and I can only attribute that to Yoast’s awesomeness. Yoast walks you through the steps you need to take for each post in order to increase its SEO power — things like keywords, writing a meta description, etc. It also gives each post a handy color-coded rating of red, yellow, or green, so you know if your post is SEO-approved.

Need more help de-mystifying SEO and increasing your site’s SEO power? Subscribe to our newsletter here in order to get a copy of our e-book, Our 12 Best Tips for Better SEO.

8. Related Posts by Zemanta // “Related Posts” is the thing you often see at the end of an article, suggesting other posts you might love from the archives. This is great for keeping people on your site and continually viewing your content.

Curious how to install any of these plugins?

It’s easy! From your WordPress dashboard, just go to “Plugins” –> “Add New.” Then search for the plugin name, click “Install Now,” and then “Activate” it. Boom.

8 WORDPRESS PLUGINS I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT

Which plugins do you love? I’m always on the hunt for great ones!

p.s. How I Grew My Blog + 20 Ten-Minute Tips for Your Blog or Business

p.p.s. This post contains a couple affiliate links, but I truly do use and love them myself. Aww giggity.

  1. Blanca Navarro says:

I’ve always wondered what plug-ins you use! Thanks for this. 🙂

  2. Amanda says:

All great! I LOVED Disqus but my readers were having issues with it loading, so I reverted back to the original WordPress comment form. sigh.

I’ve also never heard of Magic Action Box! I’m definitely going to have to check that out ASAP. I saved your post just for reference.

I would also add WP-Optimize to this list…it gets rid of all your unwanted clutter like post revisions and spam comments with the click of a button!

    • How odd! I wonder what was going on with Disqus. MAB is pretty FAB! (Ha…my puns are so lame). But it is definitely helpful when developing sites, so I think you’d dig it! I haven’t heard of WP Optimize, but as I freakin’ hate clutter, I think that one sounds amazing!!

  3. Sarah says:

Oh, this is nifty! I’m going to have to explore a few of these.

  4. Sneha says:

I love Yoast! I use it for websites that I manage at work and when I set up my own blog, it was one of the first plugins I installed. Great list, saving this one! 🙂

    x Sneha | http://www.snehakadaba.com

  5. I don’t use WordPress, but my blog is on Tumblr and Disqus has been so flexible with that platform too. I love how you can get comments from both people who have accounts AND people who don’t have one. It’s very easy to connect to people that way, especially if many of them don’t have their own accounts (Anonymous readers are fun because of the mystery of who they are! Plus I’m not popular enough to get haters lol).

I will definitely check out nRelate! Do you know if that works on Tumblr?

    http://peeintothewind.tumblr.com

    • I used to have a Tumblr and I don’t remember being able to install your own commenting platform, is that a new feature? Either way, that is so cool! I love Disqus and Tumblr so that’s great. 🙂 As for nRelate, I’m not too sure actually. You could try going to their website or visiting Linkwithin’s website, which is a similar plugin and might have more options. 🙂

  6. Fiona says:

I’ve heard lots of good things about coschedule and yoast. I just added tweetily to my blog. I’m excited to see how it works!

  7. Jenny Bess says:

This was extremely helpful. I’m a new blogger and this just made my life a LOT easier. Thank you!

  8. Thanks so much for sharing, Melyssa! Your timing couldn’t be more perfect with Magic Action Box. If I don’t have much experience working with CSS, will I be able to customize as much as you did? And did you tinker around at all with the Lite version or jump right into Pro? Wondering if the free version is workable…. Thanks for your insight, friend. And for always being so generous with your tips, tricks, and wisdom.

    • Hi Lauren! Great questions. I never used the Lite version, so I can’t say exactly what the differences are. But I can say that you don’t need to use any CSS to create your opt-in boxes and actually, mine don’t use any CSS either. It’s pretty easy for anyone to use. 🙂 Hope you have a great weekend, friend!

  9. Cori says:

I still haven’t moved my blog to wordpress, but I like reading advice for when the time comes 😉
Oh! I also use Disqus and I love it! It’s a great way to keep track of comments and conversations ♥.
    Greetings Mel 😀

  10. I love disqus too! I hate typing in numbers and what not

    Sophia | sophiebysophia.blogspot.com

  11. This is a going to be a great helper for me soon!

  12. Vanessa Key says:

I was trying to get used to WordPress, but run back to Blogger..maybe I’m used to my tipe of easy-peasy blogging.

  13. Rachel says:

Great post, Melyssa! I’ve felt the same way about the Mailchimp sign-up forms, so I’ll definitely be looking into Magic Action Box Pro!

  14. Foreign Geek says:

Thank you for giving us the insights Mel <3 I will check these plugins.

  15. Tanea says:

Thanks for this! I love seeing which plugins people use. Although, you can do #4 with a little CSS. 🙂

  16. Lilijane says:

Thank you for this post! Being a small fish in a big pond of bloggers i’m still learning as I go and these plug ins are a must for me to check out. So thanks again Mel! =)

  17. Great list of plugins! I already use a few but Tweetily is going to be amazing for my blog! I had often thought, there has to be a plugin people use when you see those ‘archive tweets’, thank you!

  18. jen schreiner says:

Love love love. Can’t wait to try some of these out

  19. Zoe says:

Really nice! I just moved my blog to wordpress and I am def gonna check out some of the plugins!

    Much love from

  20. This was really helpful thank you! I just installed Tweetily and I love that it keeps my old blog posts current in social media. Thanks!

  23. Excellent round up Mel 🙂 I love disqus, but now going to check out Tweetily and Gravity forms – thank you so much for sharing these!

  24. Martie @ Spunkyrella says:

  30. Rosa says:

I loved this post! Definitely going to give Disqus a try!

  31. Deb H says:

It looks like I’ll be ‘plugging in’ to Disqus and Tweetily. Thanks so much for this post… in addition to the one about dusting off old archives and breathing new life into them 🙂

  32. Jackie Johnson says:

Love this list! Already installed nRelate based on your recommendation and really like it! Can you share what you’re using for your “Pin it” call to action over your images? Is that a plug in? Thanks!

  33. Avi Valencia says:

I’m new at wordpress. I just transfer from Blogger to WordPress, so this post is perfect for a WordPress baby like me 😀 Thanks!

Lifestyle blog to make you smile 🙂

  35. What an awesome post! This is such precious information. I am soo glad I found your blog. Thank you!

  36. Katherine says:

    Hi Melissa!
So which of the Magic Action Box account do you currently use? Lite, Professional, or Ultimate? I mostly want add the opt-in box like you use below posts and in the sidebar as well as adding one to pop-up after a user has been on the site for a few seconds…
Thank you for your always superb content!
    Katherine

  37. Mel, do you have any advice on importing existing comments into disqus? That’s my only hesitation on switching. Thanks!

  38. Lauren says:

Great list, Melyssa! I was using nRelate as well until they closed down. Which plug-in are you using now for your related posts? I haven’t found one I love yet! (P.S. I LOVE the new site!)

    • Glad you enjoyed it, Lauren! 🙂 And I believe the new related posts section is coded into my theme by our developer, rather than with a plugin. If you’re interested, I’m sure she could add it to your site, too. 🙂 Just shoot me an email >> Design @ thenectarcollective.com 🙂

  39. Thank you for posting this! It’s well thought out and helpful. I have been happily ignoring my plugin’s because it was a little too overwhelming for a beginner and it’s great to be given a few places to start.

  40. This is so helpful! I’m new to blogging and had no idea that disqus was a plugin (duh!). I’ve also been wanting to build an email list so I’ll be installing Magic Action Box and also Yoast. Thank you SO much for sharing!

    http://DisforDreamer.com

  41. Mari says:

Very interesting article. I’m trying to do something new with my blog, so I think some of the widgets would be very useful. Until now from your list I was using only Seo widget.

  42. LisaLDN says:

I absolutely love Yoast as well, and of course the Pin It Pinterest Hover button 🙂

  43. What plugin do you use to make your site more mobile friendly? I currently use the Jetpack option and it doesn’t really make it easy to navigate. Thank you in advance!

  44. Kara says:

This is so great – I am totally trying tweetily, magic action box and related posts. Thanks! 🙂

  45. I just added Magic Action Box and I am loving playing around with it. Thanks for the suggestion!

  46. Thank you for sharing Melyssa! This post has been super helpful for me as I am in the early days of blogging. Just got started with Yoast and it is incredibly useful. I look forward to trying out the other plugins.

  47. I’m loving all of your posts, but this one especially since I’m just getting my business started and am looking for plugins to help me simplify efforts and manage my time. I am already using a couple and am looking forward to trying out the rest! Can you recommend any Curation plugins, I’m currently using ExpressCurate but am wondering about others? Thanks so much Melyssa!

    • So glad this helped, Julie. 🙂 And unfortunately I’m not too sure what a curation plugin is, ha! If you provide some more details I might be able to make some recommendations. 🙂

      • It would be a plugin that helps you build a post based on content you find elsewhere on the internet. Some of them I’ve seen put snipits in cute little quotes tagged “source” or something like that, with a link back to the original content. The intent is not to steal content, but use it to build your own post of similar information. From my understanding it’s something that is done quite frequently by bloggers.

  48. Adina Berg says:

Thanks Melyssa for the great article, it gives an insight on
different plugins some of which I myself am going to try out after reading this
post. As for curation, I use ExpressCurate, and simply love it. The layout is
unambiguous, it allows making social posts and publishing them on facebook,
twitter, g+… And what I like the most is that while creating my content, it
allows me to do some SEO, which is great, since, you know, where would we be
without it? And also the support team works quite effectively. I had an issue
with installing it, so I contacted them, and they fixed it in a couple of days.
If you’re looking for a new plugin to
give a try, I would definitely recommend it. http://www.expresscurate.com/

  49. This post is soooo helpful Melyssa! While I use some of the above in some format, I really appreciate seeing your favorites. I plan to switch to what you recommend–since I consider you THE Pro!

    Thanks,

Ann from Kremb de la Kremb

    • Hi Melyssa, I just changed my “related posts” to Zemanta. By chance, is there an easy explanation for how you centered your “Keep on Reading.” I’m trying to edit the way it displays, but I’m having a ton of difficulty–also with the sizing. What I like about yours is that you even got the post title to match your theme’s font. I noticed I could email them, but I thought I’d ask you real quick too.

Thanks! Off to make more changes:D A x

    • Thanks Ann! I’m glad to hear that this has been so helpful to you!

  50. Littlemissanni says:

Hi Melyssa, I just started my blog and I’m so excited to have found yours! there are so many helpful posts 🙂 Thank you so much and keep up the great work! 🙂

  51. Fabulous tips, Melyssa.
I’ve only started using Disqus and I can relate to what you’ve shared.

  52. I absolutely love all your posts, especially this one. It’s like you take all the hard work out for me. I just wanted to know the image resize`wizz hasn’t been updated in a while. Does it still work for you?

  53. Oksana Maxwell says:

Hi Melyssa, many, many thanks for these tips, they are very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to spread the love….
    All the best
    http://www.oksanamaxwell.com

  54. This is SO helpful! As a new WordPress user I am looking for all the plug-ins I need and want! I got that mailchimp form one because I need to have some on my site!

  55. Melyssa,

I am having a hard time creating a magic action box on my page. How did you format yours? Do you have any tips?

  56. Wow, Melyssa, (noah, my autocorrect doesn’t want me to write your name correctly..) this is so incredibly useful. How cool is tweetily? I’m feeling almost like a total wordpress-pro.. well, not really, but I’m getting there – one tiny plugin at a time. Thanks for sharing.
    x Mona

  57. This is such a great post Melyssa! Thanks so much. I just added two or three of these plugins to my site!

    xx. Brittany | Southern Soul

  58. Summer says:

Can’t believe I’ve missing missing out on the awesomeness that is Tweetily for so long! Thanks so much – just installed it!

  59. Is it necessary to have a Business plan on WordPress in order to install additional plugins? I’ve been trying to install a few, but it doesn’t seem like I can do so without paying. Thanks for the helpful post!

  60. Eva says:

I thought that Enhanced Media Library would save my wordpress experience since WP only allows folders to be organised after months. But actually it’s rather disappointing since it is not working well in the workflow of for example Salient theme. Would anyone know of a better way to get the media library organised in customised folders?

  61. Melanie says:

Hey Melyssa! Thanks so much for the information! What plugin are you using for your bio at the bottom of each post? I need that one! I’m really hoping it’s not part of your theme. I love how clean & organized your entire end-of-post section is, with your share buttons, email list signup + bio! Well done!

    • Thank you so much, Melanie! I really appreciate that. Unfortunately, it IS custom coded into my theme. I hired a developer to code that section for me, so I have to give her the credit there. I wish it were a plugin you could just add though!

      • Melanie says:

Noooo! Thank you so much for your reply. How do you find a good developer? (That would make a great blog post!) That is something I need to do. Do you have someone you work with all the time, or do you hire on as-needed basis through Elance/Upwork or something like that?

  62. vivi says:

Hey Melyssa! I have a question regarding the plugins on wordpress – are they only available on the paid version? because I’m using the free plan right now and I have the plugins tab but there’s nothing in there besides a button to upgrade.

  63. NiaSweetz says:

Hey Melyssa, just a heads up: the 10 20-minute tips & how I grew my blog have a 404 error 🙁

  64. Céline Von Wallenberg says:

These are some really useful tipps, Melyssa! Great article and red!

  65. Jaclyn says:

Hey melissa! I was wondering if you have done a more up to date post on this? I was looking for the tweetly plug in and was unable to find it! PLease let me know 🙂

  66. Thank you for sharing! I added the related posts plugin! I really love the plugin! Also another question: Why don’t you have share buttons? I want to share your article

  67. Stephen says:

    Hi Melyssa,

An interesting selection of WordPress plugins. Not the usual ones I might have expected.

CoSchedule and Tweetily are worth a look. I use Buffer to schedule my Tweets.

  68. Have you ever tried or considered using Facebook comments?

  69. Stephen says:

    Comment by: Stephen Walker

    Hi Melyssa,

I know I have commented here before but I have revisited (as you do) and note that you use Gravity Forms AND Magic Action Box Pro.

Do not both of these do your opt-in boxes?

P.S. I have requested to join your Facebook group!

  70. brooke says:

Hi Melyssa – Which plugin do you use for your social share buttons? Thanks!

  71. Pascale Jacquin says:

Hello Melyssa, I would love to see a more updated plugin list as some of these have not been updated in months by their creators. Thanks for your help!

  72. Alexandr Shevchenko says:

I’m from Ukraine. And once again convinced of the competence of Western webmasters. Thank you so much for the article! When I started to do the site, guided by this list: http://free-webmaster.ru/sozdanie-sajta-na-wordpress/plaginy-dlya-wordpress/, which is pretty weak. If I misspelled, I’m sorry – I’m from Ukraine 🙂

  73. Matt Zandstra says:

Hi Melyssa – great post. I’m a particular fan of Yoast/WordPress SEO! A few people in this thread have asked about new plugins so thought I’d mention that over at Inflatablepress we’re just kicking off a beta launch of Pressmonkey – a WordPress plugin for scheduling tweets either from your post’s edit screen, a central list, or a calendar. We’d love to offer it for free to WordPress tweeps who might like to try it out or might be interested in becoming an affiliate in future! http://www.inflatablepress.com/pressmonkey-beta-sign-up/

  74. Carren Wong says:

Hi Melyssa, Thank God I found you! I’ve just read this post and I’ve just discovered that I am supposed to functions to customise my SEO as Jetpack comes with the package I bought on wordpress. But somehow, in my editor, there is no SEO drop down for me to edit my post with. I have checked my dashboard and my jetpack and SEO functions are supposedly active.
    What happened?

    • Hey Carren! Have you downloaded the Yoast plugin? If not, that’s the one I recommend for improving your SEO. You should definitely see an SEO link in your dashboard if you install it properly. Good luck! 😀

      • Carren Wong says:

Ahhh I see. I have just followed your instructions but I think I have a problem as a WordPress user. I have been using .org as my blog for almost a year now but I have never migrated everything. And I’ve read that (just now) I have to self-host in order to download Yoast? Seems like a bit of a hassle and being so bad at tech I’m a bit worried. I’ve also read that because I am not self-hosting, I cannot “add new” in the plugin section. Would you suggest self-hosting 100%?

  75. Mikka says:

    Hi Melyssa!

This is the first time I saw your blogs and tips and I find it really interesting. However, I’m still REALLY REALLY SUPER NEWBIE in the field of blogging, I am using WordPress.com with only a free account/domain.. so all of my things there are limited. Do you think I can still monetize my blog by just using everything free for now? I still got a lot to learn and I even haven’t posted my first blog content yet because I’m still overwhelmed about everything that I’m trying to learn. I have the grasp about SEO, Email Marketing and such but I don’t have any idea on how I can apply these things that I know when I’m only using limited sources. paying for everything I need can’t be an option right now since I’m just a N.E.E.T at the moment and really penniless.. 🙁

    Any advice? 🙁

    • Thanks for your comment, Mikka! Because you are trying to start a business, it will require some investment on your part but there are certainly ways to get by when just starting out. Here’s a blog post that might be able to help right away:

      https://melyssagriffin.com/3-steps-starting-business-youre-just-ambitious-broke/

      • Mikka says:

As soon as I saw your reply, I immediately read the post. Indeed that’s very helpful. Thank you for that! Maybe I’d just stick to the initial plan I’m thinking about since I still can’t afford the tools being recommended. Maybe I’d just grow my blog audience naturally and manually without tools for now (well, I have MailChimp integrated with WordPress.com but I’m still not that familiar on how to use it, I’ll be reading your post about MailChimp too. ^_^ Thanks again!

  76. Pinto Pony says:

Hey there. Super excited about all your info. I’ve been sharing it with all my clients. Do you use a plugin for your blog search? It’s quite good! Thanks!

  77. Danielle says:

    Hi Melyssa!

Thanks so much for sharing this information! I always wonder what plugins you big timers are using! Quick question, I tried to find the Image Resize Wizz and an old plugin came up that hasn’t been updated in over 6 years. Is this the plugin you use?

    Thanks so much!

  78. Tsvetelina says:

Love this post, do you think a blogger needs W3 Total Cache plugin (or any other cache)?

    Thank you!

  79. Thank you for all of this info, Melyssa! I just subscribed to your email list. I’m looking how to install Google Analytics into my wordpress.org, did you write a blog about this already?? Thank you in advance! Kellie http://www.thebicoastalbeauty.com

  80. Brandy Nicole Lawson says:

Hey Melyssa! The Tweetily plugin has not been updated in 3 years and there have been a lot of recent reports of it no longer working. Such a bummer – I was SUPER excited about that one!! 🙂 Do you know of another plugin that works like Tweetily? Thanks! Always love your insight!

  81. Lifestyle Hunter says:

Thank you so much!! I just found your blog and I love it!! Hey I installed Disqus on my blog and imported all WordPress comments but in both the Automatic and Manual Imports my avatar pictures were gone… do you know if there’s a way of making an import and preserving the avatars? Thanks, Pilar

  82. MANOJ says:

    Hi Melyssa,

Excellent post. What about Revive old post ? I am using this plugin for quite long time and it automatically share my contents across the networks.

Thank you very much for the post.

    Take care,

  83. Michael Amaral says:

Thanks for sharing such an essential WordPress plugins.
But you can also include Responsive Blog Designer which include 33 high impact blog template and 5 blog templates as compared with other responsive plugins i have found it better.

    Hi Melyssa,
I’ve been using Magic Action Box on your recommendation (as well as all the other plugins you mentioned – THANK YOU!) but MAB hasn’t been updated in a while and I think it might be causing problems on my website. I was wondering whether you had any recommendations for other opt-in form plugins that are up to date! Thanks so much!!

    Hi Melyssa,
Do you personally still use Related Posts by Zemanta on your blog? I noticed quite a number of poor feedback from users since the recent plugin update, so I’m hesitating over whether I should use it too. Would you have other recommendations that wouldn’t slow down a site too much? Thank you! 🙂

Love your blog so much btw, it’s been such a great resource for me who’s just starting out <3

Great job Melyssa. Thanks for sharing a wonderful list of WordPress plugins.
You can try “Portfolio Designer Lite” WordPress plugin as well. It is fully responsive and SEO friendly. It has many stunning features like image auto resize, unique hover effect, social share support and lots more.

Tweetily hasn’t been updated in 7 years and is no longer downloadable from the WordPress plugin repository. I loved that plugin. Loved it. Is there anything like it around these days?
