Have you ever faked being sick to get out of work? While I don’t like to lie (and I’m a little ashamed to admit this story), I did that once. I went so far as to put a thermometer in my mouth, pull it out and pretend to read the temperature, and then pretend to be surprised by my supposed “fever.” My temperature was normal, of course, but I had a feeling that using a thermometer would make my “illness” seem all the more real. My boss believed me and urged me to go home and get some rest.

I tell you this story, again, with a little hesitation. I don’t like the thought of being manipulative or lying to get my way, but I wanted to show you how absolutely miserable I was. I remember waking up for that job each morning and hoping that I would actually be sick so that I wouldn’t have to go. I literally hated my job so much that I’d rather have been physically ill. Yikes.

While working at that day job, I started this blog in my spare time. It ended up being just the release I needed — something to take my mind off of work and to fuel me with a sense of purpose. I was obsessed. Initially, I started my blog as purely a hobby. In fact, I didn’t even know it was possible to earn money as a blogger and assumed people who did were just anomalies…the people who write books about living on a white sand beach and drinking margaritas for breakfast. Not me.

But within a few months, I was starting to get the hang of things. My efforts were turning into something real. I was growing a mini audience and even making a few hundred dollars per month from my blog. It was utterly exciting. I felt truly proud of myself because *I* did this. Then, a couple months later, I made my first $1,000 from my blog, all in less than 6 months. I can’t tell you how exhilarating that felt. I started looking forward to waking up each day, because even though I had a day job that broke my spirit, I got to look forward to working on my blog in the evenings.

One of the best days of my life came nine months after starting my blog. I put in my two weeks notice at my job and began to pursue my blog and business full-time. These days, my blog biz is thriving. It’s been over two years since I quit my last day job and I am happier and more fulfilled than ever. I feel like I have a purpose. Not to mention, my bank account is thanking me, too. 😉
