6 WAYS TO GROW YOUR BLOG OR BUSINESS USING TWITTER

Oh man. Ever since launching blog consultations, one of the most common questions I get asked is, “how do I use Twitter?” Luckily for you, I’ve been around the Twitter block a few times, and have some useful answers to help you grow your blog or business using Twitter. Want to know the deets? You got it.

Use images in your tweets

Sarah let me in on this sweet statistic: tweets with images are 94% more likely to get retweeted. Holy cow! So the next time you promote that recent blog post on Twitter, make sure to upload a photo, too. Twitter images are 440x220px, and you’d be doing yourself an even bigger favor to create an image of that size, with your post title on it. Not only will your post stand at in someone’s feed, but they’ll be able to quickly glean why it will be useful. (Here’s an example).

Join Twitter chats

A twitter chat is where a bunch of people congregate on twitter at a specific time, in order to answer questions provided by a specific host. The questions are usually geared toward helping you think critically about your blog or business and I often walk away from them feeling motivated and learning a thing or two. Aside from that, most twitter chats get a large amount of participants, meaning it’s very easy to meet new bloggers and gain some extra followers, too. Kayla has a nice post with some great twitter chats for creative entrepreneurs.

Share other people’s work

This is a no brainer, but it’s SO important! Twitter is a way for you to grow your community and make real connections with other influencers. The best way to do this? Share other people’s work and don’t forget to “@” them with their username. Also? If you share their posts in an interesting way, they might retweet you, which will get you in front of their Twitter audience, too. Plus, your Twitter followers will get bored if you only share your own stuff. Mix it up by sharing relevant work from others.

Use it as the first point of contact for collaborations

Growing your blog can often mean collaborating with others, whether it be other bloggers or Big Time Brands. If you want to collaborate with a blogger or brand, sending them a long email right off the bat (if you’ve never spoken before) might seem a little intrusive. Casually say what’s up on Twitter and let them know you’ve got an idea brewing. That will put you on their radar and will help your collaboration idea seem more personal when you pop it into their inbox in the near future.

Host a Twitter chat

So you learned about Twitter chats up above, but what’s stopping you from hosting one yourself? You’ll need some dedicated readers or clients to get it off the ground, but the great thing about Twitter chats is that every time someone tweets using your chat’s specific hashtag, their entire feed will see it and get curious. This is how I’ve ended up joining lots of chats myself! Lots of Twitter chats happen on a consistent basis (every week or month at the same time), but if you just want to do a one-time chat (great for learning more about your customers if you ask the right questions), then that’s totally great, too. Feeling fearful about putting yourself out there? Try partnering with a blog buddy to get it off the ground.

Pin a tweet that will grow your following

Twitter now has a function where you can pin a tweet to your profile, so it will always sit at the top. Sometimes I just pin my favorite posts, but you can certainly be more strategic with this — like pinning a tweet letting your followers know that you’re killin’ it on Instagram and they should probably follow you there, too.

Tell me, what’s your favorite thing about Twitter?

p.s. Want to know four more ways to grow your blog using Twitter? I’m sharing extra details, including my new favorite tip, with my newsletter subscribers later today. Don’t miss it! You can subscribe right here.

  5. Kasey Decker says:

  6. Franco Dira says:

Twitter is my favourite way to market myself and my blog, so these tips are very welcome, thank you. And I agree with adding images to your blog post tweets, I always check people’s images first on twitter. Thank you again for these great tips! x

  7. Monique Muro says:

Love this post, thanks for sharing! I subscribed awhile back and for some reason haven’t gotten a single thing. I haven’t seen anything come through my spam either, do you know of anyone else experiencing this issue? I definitely want your posts in my inbox 🙂

  8. I’m so bad at twitter… but this is super helpful, especially the bit about pictures! I always try to make graphics to go with my posts for Pinterest (a lot of traffic comes from Pinterest), and all of my friends in blogland talk about the virtues of twitter. I should definitely try these!

  9. Stacia says:

Twitter is my biggest struggle, but these tips are really helpful. I like the conversational aspect of Twitter, I just need to keep practicing at remembering to do it. 🙂

  10. Amanda says:

How did I not know about pinning tweets?! WHAT?! Thanks for this list, it’s perfect!

  11. Love this list Mel! I’ve never loved using Twitter, but this gives me some motivation 🙂

  12. I guess I find twitter intimidating, it kind of feels like sitting in a corner muttering to yourself and occasionally wandering up to someone you’ve never met and saying ‘hi’ with a blank face, while waiting for them to respond. For me, I find it hard to link genuine connection with twitter…am I looking at it the wrong way or should I be thinking of new ways to try to build that connection through the fast paced medium?

    • Ha! I TOTALLY understand how you feel. I think that’s how a lot of people feel about Twitter, actually. You’re not alone! I think that starting with some Twitter chats will definitely add that community aspect you’re looking for and give you some new connections to keep in touch with. Also, a tip I mentioned in my newsletter is to use Twitter lists, where you can compile a list of only the bloggers you really connect with, or whose blogs you love. That way, you can look through a feed of only the people you vibe with most, so it’s easier to interact with them and become more connected.

      • 🙂 I’ve been using lists for a while and you’re right, it does help. Do you have any tips as to categories for lists? I often want to put all the Bloggers I come across into one and then if I find they’re saying things I’m interested in, I’d want to put them in another list that I check more frequently, but I think I might be making it too complicated for myself.

        • I think I’d end up doing the same thing, haha! I would say that when you notice certain bloggers saying things you’re consistently interested in, then reach out to them, whether by Twitter posts or through email. Those are your people, so it’s important to establish a more “real” relationship with them. Then, add them to your smaller list of people you “click” with.

          • This is so true. The technical stuff comes easily to me but I tend to lean on the side of observation until I have a firm plan sorted. It’s the details that bog me down… I really needed the reminder that you just have to tell people when you connect with something they say rather than waiting for the perfect witty comment. 🙂

I’ve really enjoyed our chat and watching your growth has been so educating. Thanks for the article! I really love d it.

          • I’ve enjoyed chatting with you, too, Hannah! I look forward to more chats in the future — you ask some really great questions! 🙂

  13. Cori says:

I just needed this! Thank you so much Mel ♥.
Also, I loved the extra tips I got from the newsletter!

  31. Rachelle Ray says:

I’m still in the “what even is Twitter?” phase, but it’s finally starting to feel natural. I love the idea of jumping in on a chat to meet other bloggers, and using a casual tweet to kick off a possible collaboration. Thanks for another amazing post and great tips!

    • That’s so good to hear, Rachelle! 🙂 Twitter is a great place to connect since it’s so easy and “quick” with the character limitations! Your idea to send casual tweets to potential collaborators is spot on. Good luck!

  32. Kaley Taylor says:

Is using Twitter to promote your blog and gain traffic essential, or is it just another option? I’ve never really liked Twitter and I find that it gets me in a bad headspace for some reason, so I don’t want to have to use it for my blog. Am I going to be missing out majorly?

    • Hi Kaley 🙂 I wouldn’t use it if you find that your audience isn’t there. Twitter has changed a lot since I first wrote this post over 2 years ago. A lot of bloggers will use ‘schedulers’ to auto schedule their content to Twitter, and have the posts recycle every so often, so that way you can set the foundation and not have to do a lot of work to maintain it 🙂 My best advice if you’re just getting started, is to focus on the 1 or 2 platforms you really love and set up a solid foundation there before adding additional platforms.

  33. Divine Claw says:

Thanks a lot it really helps me a lot..twitter has always been the week link in my tool kit but I definitely feel more equipped to master it now.

  34. athenadecember says:

great article! how to join twitter chats?

    • Hi! 🙂 I would recommend logging into Twitter and typing “twitter chat” into the search box in quotes. This should pull up some different ones. For example, I know social media companies like Buffer and Sprout Social host a weekly chat, but there are many others in different niches.
