How excited were you when Instagram announced you can now hashtag emojis? I nearly lost it, and admittedly spent way too long searching all the cutest emojis! As fun as hashtags can be, they’re also super beneficial for boosting your Instagram followers, if done correctly. It’s been a long learning process for me, and I’m still growing, but I can say with ease that Instagram has been the biggest traffic driver to my blog.

Here’s the biggest mistake I made when I first started using Instagram: I never used hashtags.

I thought they were annoying, and I almost felt a little embarrassed tagging each of my photos with copious amounts of random words. But let me tell you: If you’re using your Instagram account to grow your blog or business, you must use hashtags. They’re magical little creatures that automatically publicize your pictures — super valuable! I’ve played with and tested my share of hashtags at this point, so I thought I’d share a few that I’ve found hugely beneficial for my growth and for getting my Instagram out to the right audiences.

First of all, the idea isn’t to simply tag the crap out of your photos with any word that might kind of relate to your photo. Instead, look through each one and decide if your aesthetics and photos match what each hashtag is looking for. Your photo is going to sit among thousands of other creative shots, so you want to make sure it will both fit nicely with the others and stand out, too! That way, potential, new followers will be intrigued to check out your account.

Also? You can use up to 30 hashtags for each photo. I recommend using all of them (because why not?) 😉

These are my go to hashtags:

1. #flashesofdelight

This hashtag was started by the Glitter Guide account. Anything fun and girly fits well under this hashtag. The Glitter Guide is awesome because they look through the hashtag and pick a few photos to regram throughout the week. This account actually reposted two of my photos, which brought in a ton of new, engaged followers. Even if they don’t repost your photo, if they like what they see, they will literally “like” it, and your photo has a good chance of ending up on people’s “explore” feeds (in other words, a whole set of new eyes on your account!).

Also, on Fridays, The Glitter Guide posts “5 Things To Try This Weekend” on their blog, where they give you a list of five fun weekend activities to do. If you do them and photograph them, tag #GG5things, and they may also regram you there! Not a lot of people use this hashtag, so your chances of getting your photo featured on their account are a little higher.

2. #communityovercompetition

If you follow The Rising Tide Society, you know that they are an incredible community for bloggers and entrepreneurs alike! This behind #communityovercompetition is about putting relationships first, over opportunities. It’s about serving others, lifting others up, and connection.

You can also visit their #tuesdaystogether hashtag for more of the same.

3. #bandotodolist

The Shopbando account is seriously fun. It’s full of life and color, but more importantly, it’s full of community! These girls love sharing their followers’ photos! On Friday’s they post a “ban.do to do list,” which, much like the GG 5 things, gives you a fun weekend activity to try. Try it out, photograph it, hashtag it, and they may regram you! They posted my photo in December and I was actually the most excited, ever. I kind of fan girl over this account, it’s so creative and colorful!

They also use #bandofun to search for photos to regram, so check that hashtag out and see if any of your photos fit that category, too!

4. #thatsdarling

This hashtag was started by Darling Magazine. Darling is easily one of my favorite accounts to follow. All their photos are crisp, clean, and so beautiful! I use this hashtag on just about every photo I post. I’ve gotten tons of new followers just from using this hashtag alone! The idea is to share darling moments in your life, which is fun because it’s such an open-ended concept and you can really get creative! Darling also reposts photos quite often.

Also, check out their #darlingweekend hashtag!

5. #mybeautifulmess

Created by team at A Beautiful Mess, this hashtag is for every creative out there! Their Instagram account is dedicated primarily to regramming their followers’ photos, which is seriously awesome of them! Melyssa had her photo regrammed on there once, too, woohoo! They have a ton of hashtags you can use, their most current one being #abmspring.

Also check out: #abmtravelbug #abmlifeissweet #abmpatternlove #abmmurals

6. #DScolor

Design blog guru, Design*Sponge, has its own hashtag, too! For this hashtag, they look for, you guessed it, colorful photos to share on their account!

7. #pursuitwithpurpose

Lest you forget, MelyssaGriffin.com has its own hashtag, too! Share your hustle so we can cheer you on. This hashtag is perfect for all creatives, bloggers, and business owners.

Using hashtags can be a little overwhelming at first, but the most important thing to remember is to stay true to yourself. Some, or maybe all, of these hashtags may not really apply to you, and that’s perfectly okay! Poke around, search for hashtags you’re interested in, and see if there are other accounts you can follow that will challenge you and help you grow your community. That is what Instagram is all about, right?

What are some of your go-to hashtags? Have you found any that have significantly helped you grow your own community?

  1. Great post! I’m always on the hunt for new hashtags and communities on Instagram. I noticed that TNC has added a social media follower count as a focal point in the sidebar. I’d love to read a post about that! I’ve seen a lot of blogs have started prominently featuring their follower stats. Is it for readers? Sponsors? Prestige?

    Thanks for a great post!

  2. Cat R says:

WAIT, Jess, do you know how often I’m like, ugh her photo is so cute and what are those hashtags about?? Finally an explanation, and on TNC, and FROM YOU! Ugh I love everything about it. And you. Please send pics of Duke soon, going slowly insane. Withdrawals! I can repay you with cute pictures of baby geese……
Also to ACTUALLY contribute to this, I sometimes use #fmsphotoaday – they’ve got a prompt every day and it’s fun to see other people’s stuff! I don’t do it too often and my photos aren’t nearly as creative as some people’s, but it’s fun to try to come up with something clever with that! Same with Instagram’s Weekend Hashtag Project, which obviously changes every weekend.

  3. Liz says:

This is a great post! I love Instagram but I didn’t know about any of the mentioned hashtags, so thanks for sharing!

  22. Chad Hatten says:

  23. Hoda Katebi says:

This was actually super helpful, thank you! I usually have found that #hashtagging the city/location where the photo was taken & adding geotags is also really helpful for growing your local audience! (& if you’re a fashion blogger can land you some fun collaborations with local photographers/brads!) I actually just published a post this morning titled “The Instagram of A Really Good Student” (http://www.joojooazad.com/2015/05/the-instagram-of-really-good-college-student-tips.html) and included a few tips for what I thought the most important way to grow your Instagram following & I will be sure to link to this post because it was so helpful! Thanks again! 🙂

  24. Nicole Rose says:

This is incredibly helpful, thank you. 🙂

  25. I agree, hashtags are crucial to grow Instagram! I actually went back and hashtagged some of my earlier photos and found that I got a great amount of likes and follows. Since I travel blog over at http://www.thepinthemapproject.com, I tend to use travel hashtags including:

    #wanderlust
    #instatravel
    #travelgram
    #OnAssignment
    #travel

  26. Pippi Hepburn says:

Thank you so much, Jess. I have not used hashtags no knowing how to use them and to not be spammy. But I will go thru this list and start adding hashtags! http://www.pippihepburn.etsy.com

  27. Angelica Sereda says:

This is super helpful, thank you!

  28. This is awesome! I visit most of these sites but never knew about these hashtags. I had the same general feeling towards them as you in the beginning too. I didn’t really get how important adding hashtags was, but it’s definitely the reason Instagram is probably the easiest social media site to get to know new and random people.

  29. Megan says:

This was so helpful! My site is focused more on holistic wellness and nutrition, but I also focus a ton of food styling and photography, so I typically use hashtags for photography as well as nutrition-related posts. This seems to help!

Also, what really helped me start to get followers was to really pay attention to when you’re posting. I’ve noticed that since I started posting during “ideal times” such as before work/lunchtime/after work/evening in PACIFIC TIME (I live on the East cost), I’ve really gotten some attention due to the fact that the West coast is more health oriented! Just a thought to consider.

  30. This will be very helpful for my site, I have a lot of pretty dresses and I need to get them out there as to draw customers to my site

  31. Kristi Craig says:

I’ve definitely learned how powerful hashtags on Instagram are lately! Trying to grow my blog has been a long and challenging process, but have the right hashtags has helped me to get some visibility.

    Kristi
    http://www.beloverly.com

  32. Amber Valencia says:

I too loathed hashtags, especially when folk posted them to Facebook when the platform didn’t even yet recognize them. And let’s be honest, they can be annoying if they’re vague or barely related to the topic at hand.
However I enjoy Instagram, but am waiting for a real camera to take cleaner, crisper images!
Until then I will bask in the accounts here mentioned because not only are they beautiful, but inspiring!
    Thank you

  33. Cassandre says:

This is so helpful!! thank you. I love A Beautiful Mess 😉

  34. Torie says:

Love these! They have helped amp up my Insta-game for sure! 🙂 Now I am just working on getting a consistent look and theme that fits well with my new blog brand. Your posts have been so helpful in keeping the right mindset to up my blogging game and really take it to the next level!

  35. Renee says:

cool post, Im going to try them out

  36. Kayla says:

  39. Thanks for these ideas! When it comes to hashtags, do you think there’s a perfect amount (not too few and not too many)?

  40. I’ve been thinking hard about my social media game lately since I’ve been too lazy (and afraid) to start one for my new blog when my wedding planning biz already has so many followers. I hate starting from scratch but I’ll bite the bullet and remember to use these hashtags!

  41. Megan says:

LOVE this post! So wonderful and fun for designers like myself. I will definitely use your hashtags for our two companies http://www.decor-2-ur-door.com and http://www.babybumpbedding.com!

  42. Roxanne says:

Thank you! I’ve been seeing a couple of these hashtags around Instagram and wondering what kind of pictures can be posted with them. By the way, do you have any suggestions for hashtags to use on more minimalistic photos as they are more my style? Most of these hashtags seem to focus on colourful photos.

    xx, Roxanne
    http://www.themagicalcanopy.wordpress.com

    • Hi Roxanne! I would recommend checking out what kinds of hashtags minimalistic photographers are using. It’s likely that there are some common ones to use in that market, so the best way to find that out is to see if there are any that are being used by photographers you know of. 🙂

  43. Mckenna says:

This is really helpful! I’ve already gotten many more Insta followers using a few of these on just two pictures.

  44. so helpful, now i can up my insta game!

  49. Krishna says:

Ohhh this is a fab article!! I was curious about the #thatsdarling that I have seen LOADS all over desginers/creatives instagram photos, but never actually understood it!!..

  50. Elaine C says:

woo hoo thanks for these hashtags!! Will be using them in my IG posts, Melissa!!!

  51. Hannah says:

Brilliant blog post! Look forward to trying these out 🙂

  52. Sharyn Holmes says:

Love these. Thanks for sharing these great hashtags!

  53. Sweet Right Here says:

This is great! Thanks! I’m soooo new to the hashtag thing. Most of the articles I read on this topic just post about the most used hashtags like #love and #picoftheday But the ones you wrote about have more substance…and are more fun!

  54. Dia says:

So I’ve been on an off you website about 20 times today. I keep ending up here! You know I’m a huge fan (and self-proclaimed new best friend lol) This time I was lead here by the TBAB course. I didn’t actually start using Instagram until July, I was blogher 15 and my friend was like, “You’re a blogger and you don’t use instagram??!” So I joined. I’m often hesitant about what hashtags to use and a lot of these I hadn’t seen before. With the last name Darling it’s silly I’ve missed the “thatsdarling” hashtag. Thanks for sharing this list. Hopefully these will help with my Instagram/Blog engagement.

  55. Orc_Chops says:

Following your guide for increasing blog traffic, started my review blog in October, over 1000+ views but no subscribers hopefully a few hashtags can help me gain some subscribers.

  56. Kev Shepard says:

Hashtags are surely amazing, both to discover and get discovered. I never know what tags to use, and your article gave me a couple ideas) Although to get noticed and, subsequently, shared, it’s not enough to put likes, you always have to check new posts in the niche and like them ASAP. I personaly use zengram.net to interact with newest content on the network. Saves me hours every day, so i can thoughtfully discover new amazing artists and bloggers while my instagram account is growing. But, in the end of the day, the only thing that matters is the quality of content you share. Thanks for the article, hopefully my suggestions are useful.

  57. Crystal Holdefer says:

My favorites are myunicornlife, calledtobecreative, and creativityfound. I draw as a hobby and I love how myunicornlife speaks to my quirkiness. 🙂

  58. My favourites are kosherfood, whatsfordinner, momlife, mealprep, mealplanning and I always use my own blog name as a tag, kasheringyoulife.

  59. Carmela says:

Thanks so much! I’ve definitely paid more attention to my hashtags recently and could not believe the difference it’s made. I’ll be sure to incorporate these!

  60. Liska Monet says:

Thank you so much for this list! I actually already used some of those but I also found some new ones I can use from now on. Really helped! (:
    http://liskamonet.blogspot.com.au/

  61. Ellie says:

Love this post! I’ve been on Instagram for ages but I started actually using it just about a month ago… I used hashtags before, but not the right ones! I thing is when I found this post that I started using the ones that you suggest and looking for others like these ones. My pictures now have way more likes (it may be not that much for other people, but for me having 100 likes on a picture is really a lot!) and I feel I’m connecting a lot more with other users! It’s amazing! I always loved photography, but now my passion came back stronger than ever!
I even started my own hashtag, #chasinglittlewonders , and I was so excited when people (just a few, for now, but the number it’s slowly growing), started to using it too!
So thanks again for you amazing post! It really helped me enjoying this magic little Instagram world!

    Love,
    Ellie (@eelii on Instagram)

  62. Thank you for putting together this post, lots of really helpful information. I didn’t appreciate the power of hashtags on Instagram until I started using some of the more niche tags. I’m now connecting with people who are really supportive of my photos and the things I create. I will check out some of the accounts you mention above, thanks again!

  63. Hashtags completely changed my InstaGame!
I went from maybe all of my friends liking my photos to all of these fellow lifestyle bloggers finding me and liking them too!
On top of that, they have helped me find bloggers in the same niche as me!
I used to think the exact same thing about them. They were tacky and really didn’t serve any purpose other than looking silly. Boy I was wrong!

  64. You may want to update your link. When I clicked on the nectar collection it took me to your old IG page and I was like…she blocked me?? I then realized it was your old page, no wonder it looks like a page when someone blocks people. LOL

  65. vinma says:

I had no idea about any of these hashtags. Thanks so much, will be applying them appropriately 😉

  66. Jessica Gurney says:

    Melyssa,

I just wanted to let you know, your blog is amazing. I just spent the last three hours reading some of your posts, and this is coming from a girl who usually has the attention span of goldfish. I am working on a blog myself and I swear you have answered all my questions, including ones I have not even thought of yet. I love what you are doing and just wanted to let you know I will frequent your blog. Keep up the fabulous work!

    • This comment totally made my day! Thank you so much for letting me know, Jessica! I’m so so so happy you’ve found this content helpful 🙂

Best of luck my friend and please keep me posted on your progress!

  67. Elise says:

    Hey Melyssa,

Thank you for sharing all of this information, and these hashtags – it’s so valuable. I’ve found hashtags have been an incredible source of traffic to my blog/community Instagram account @sheislight. I created the hashtag #sheislight which has close to 12,000 images, and also # other community tags.

I’ll definitely be looking into some of the ones you’ve suggested, and your strategies. Thank you!

  68. Simran Juglal says:

    Hi Melyssa,

I just want to say a huge thank you to you and your blog! Since discovering all of these hashtags (that I have never heard of before), my Instagram posts have been getting more engagements. I’m glad that there are platforms (like this blog) to help new bloggers reach a greater audience.

  69. Miiko Mentz says:

First, I want to tell you that I recently came across your blog (and social accounts) and I absolutely love ???? your work!!! This post is filled with juicy goodness. Love these Instagram accounts and hashtags! Thank you!

On a side note, I noticed that one of the IG accounts, A Beautiful Mess, that you link to has moved from here https://www.instagram.com/abeautifulmessofficial/ to here https://www.instagram.com/abeautifulmess/. Thought you might want to know.

Have a wonderful weekend, Melyssa! ????

  70. Thanks so much for the helpful info! I’m trying to grow my following on Instagram: @trueimagejewelry, to help people find my online handmade jewelry shop. If you have any new suggestions, I’d love to hear them!

  71. Jitka says:

Hi Melyssa, is it really true? from the first paragraph: “…but I can say with ease that Instagram has been the biggest traffic driver to my blog.” Isn’t it Google or Pinterest? I have been around your blog for a while but this surprises me.

    • Hi Jitka! This post is a little outdated but when I wrote it, Instagram was my #1 traffic generator. But you’re correct in saying that now it is a combination of Pinterest and Google that brings in most of my traffic. 🙂

  72. George Freeman says:

Hi, I’d like to ask you about apps. You know a lot of instagram and I think you know or have own opinion at least. So, my sister started to use app called zen-promo as I remember that gain followers for her. Is it okey to do there? Can you be banned for that if it finds real people and don’t create fakes? And how do you feel about it? Thank you

  73. Lesley says:

I’ve read that you should use very targetted hashtags – like ones with 30k-300k posts – in order to actually be seen and not have your post lost instantly in the mix. Can I ask your thoughts on this?

    • Hi Lesley! I think it’s a great idea to use a mix of both! The logic behind using hashtags with 30K-300K posts is due to the increased possibility of being on the Top 9. Hashtags with millions of posts are continually refreshed and posts are buried within minutes because so many people are using them. From a discoverability standpoint, I think the best thing to do is to use hashtags that are in your niche that are more searchable and not as broad and huge 🙂 The recommendation you got is a good benchmark to go by!

  74. Erika says:

I only just started using hashtags, and within three posts with some similar go-to hashtags, I got shadow banned by Instagram. Do you have any advice to avoid this happening? So frustrating!

    • Oh no, that is super frustrating Erika. Are there any hashtag lists you can locate online to determine which ones are causing the ban? I’ve heard that the shadow ban is at least a temporary thing, and your account should go back to normal 🙂
