Despite the fact that my job as a blogger and designer is constantly evolving, I do find that I have a routine to my days. It’s been awhile since I’ve shared a “behind-the-scenes” look at my day-to-day, so I’m looking forward to peeling back the curtains a bit and answering a question that I get quite frequently: “so, what do you do all day?”

8:00-8:45am: This is when I groggily wake up, look around to see what funky sleeping position my dog is currently in, and crawl out of bed. I shower and do the basic things necessary to maintain a normal human hygiene (ha!), and then I cuddle my dog until he wakes up (seriously, I’m a monster). I take him outside and then make breakfast before sitting down for work. Lately, I’ve been having avocado toast, a smoothie, and a cup of coffee every.single.day. It’s pretty much the best.
I forgot to mention, but I also aim to get rid of electronics in my bedroom when I’m going to sleep. Instead of using my phone’s alarm, I have an old-fashioned alarm clock that sounds more like a 1950s fire alarm than anything that should be near my ears. It’s been working out well. 😉

8:45-9:30am: This is when I’ll settle down at my desk and start answering emails, mainly to clients and TNC’s developer, Amanda. I don’t think answering emails first thing is the best idea, and it’s a habit I’d honestly like to change.
During this time, I also make a to-do list for the day, with the main tasks I’d like to get done. I have a notebook that I always keep near me for that purpose.
9:30am-12:30pm: What I do during this time can vary a lot each day, but here are some examples of things I’m most likely doing >>
- Working on design projects for clients.
- Chatting with my blog coaching clients.
- Writing blog posts.
- Responding to comments on the blog.
- Working on our weekly newsletter.
- Taking photos for blog posts (the lighting is best at this time!).
- Reaching out to brands with potential collaboration ideas.
- Approving TNC contributor pitches and editing contributor posts.
- Running errands for any supplies I need, from office supplies to photo props.
This is one of my most productive periods during the day, so I generally try to utilize that time to get a lot done! As a specific example, today I finished design proofs for a client, did some trouble-shooting for another client, scheduled a couple blog coaching sessions for next week, and published a blog post.

12:30-1:15pm: Lunch! I like to cook, so I almost always cook something for lunch and dinner. Today, I made teriyaki chicken with veggies and rice pilaf. While eating, I almost always watch an episode of a show I’ve seen 900 times, like The Office or my new favorite, House Hunters. 😉 I also often have shows like that playing in the background while I work. I find it’s pretty helpful to have some background noise while designing. And I love this site, which sounds like a coffee shop!
I also take Monja outside for a little break at this time. Lately, I’ve been trying to take him for longer, 30-minute walks + training sessions, which usually extends my break by a few minutes. Here’s Monja, pooped after a long afternoon of doing nothing. 😉

1:15-1:45pm: Another bad habit of mine is that I check my emails all throughout the day, rather than at a couple specific times each day. But after lunch, I do ease my way back into work by checking my email and social media. Sometimes, around this time, I’ll also schedule social media promotions for blog posts.
1:45pm-6:00pm: Like my productive block of time in the afternoon, this section of time is often filled with a variety of different tasks, from creating e-books for our newsletter subscribers to finishing design proofs for clients. Today, during this timeframe, I edited some blog posts, scheduled a future post, did a bit of social media work, revised design proofs for two clients, and revised the PDF that I give to new potential clients with my services and pricing (which was on my to-do list for ages!). I also gave Monja a bath — don’t tell him, but he needed it! 😉
6:00pm-?: Around 6, Monja starts whining about how I haven’t fed him in for-e-ver, so I end up giving him dinner and making some for myself, too. I’ll eat, read, cuddle Monja, and maybe watch some Netflix. After that, I usually work a little more, by choice. If I work in the evening, it’s not usually on client projects like designs or blog coaching, it’s more-so my own side projects, like e-books and e-courses I want to launch. It’s kind of my “fun time” and those are the types of things that I get really fired up about. 🙂
Most of the time, I work from my desk at home, but once or twice a week, I like to walk to a nearby coffee shop to crank out some work, too. I find that it’s really helpful to get out of the house and surround myself with others who are working, too.
Since I work from home most days, it’s uber important to have a space that inspires me. I once tried to use a tiny bar cart as a desk in a studio apartment and was massively uninspired. >_< To make my workspace feel more homey, I used a few products — as seen in the photos above — from Lulu & Georgia. You can check them all out there: Misty Pillow (Teal), Agate Coasters, Taliah Pillow (Violet), Kamile Pillow (Black), Natural Patan Pouf, White Florence Throw.
By the way, Lulu & Georgia is having a site-wide 25% off sale for Memorial Day from May 22nd to May 25th, 2015! Mark your calendars, friends. 🙂
What is your typical workday like?
This post is in collaboration with Lulu & Georgia. Thank you for supporting the awesome brands that keep The Nectar Collective going.

I love the idea of taking all technology out of the bedroom..new goal!
It really helps! But whenever I wake up I always wish I had my phone so that I can mindlessly scroll through social media for a few minutes. I’m hoping that feeling will go away eventually. 😉
As a full-time blogger + photographer, I also work in chunks! I find that simply setting aside chunks of time (instead of planning out my day’s tasks EXACTLY) makes me more productive because then I can fill that chunk with whatever I’m feeling “inspired” to get done at that moment. 😛
Also have you ever tried bullet proof coffee? It’s delicious … I’m drinking some now! Ha!
xoxo

Yes, I totally know what you mean, Allison! It’s SO much nicer to kind of “go with the flow.” And I haven’t tried bullet proof coffee, but it sounds like I need to! 😀
Your day sounds great! I love the idea of being your own boss and deciding what time you want to take to do each task 🙂

Me toooooo Jo!
Your day sounds fun!! I love these kind of nosy posts because I really enjoy reading what other people do with their days (:

haha I love them too! 🙂
Ah this is seriously my dream! I’m currently studying full time, working 40% as an assistant at a recruitment company and running my webdesign business on the side.. and it just seems so much more inspiring and motivating to work like this than every evening until midnight and during weekends. But I love designing, so I can’t give it up. Thanks for this great post, so much fun to read!
I know how tough that is! I was the same way in the beginning too — working constantly. It does get better though, but it takes time. 🙂
It sounds great being your own boss, that is my eventual goal. (And to be able to sleep till 8:30.) Right now I’m at the office by 8:30 then I normally do a quick workout during lunch then back to work for 3 more hours. Then I head home have my mandatory unwind time, where I watch about a hour of tv or cook (which relaxes me) then back to work on my blog and any fiverr jobs till about 10:30 when I force myself to close my laptop.
http://www.allthethingsido.com/
It sounds like you have a busy day, Dia! I definitely remember jobs of mine where I had to be in the office by 8:30ish and man, it was tough for me! This works a lot better haha. Since you are doing fiverr, are you hoping to freelance full time?
Yes that is what I’m trying to transition into. I’d love to focus on my blog and freelance social media and copy writing.
Thanks for sharing, Melyssa! Somehow I can relate to your need of getting outside and working from a coffee shop. I am a full-time student and, for several reasons, I spent the last few years studying for my exams at home all day. It drove me crazy, so I started going to the library for studying!
Glad you can relate, Alice! It really helps a lot. I think I’ll be heading to a coffee shop today actually! 🙂
Have a great, productive, happy day then! 🙂
Why thank you Alice! You, too! 🙂
Melyssa, this post is super inspiring! A) It’s a relief to know that you break your day up into creativity chunks like I do. B) You are so productive! I’m mega impressed and also a little convicted about how much time it takes me to finish my work. Way to be awesome, as per usual!
I’m glad you liked it, Christy! And if it makes you feel better, writing still takes the most time of anything I do! I understand how you must feel! But creativity chunks are the besssst, aren’t they? Definitely one of my favorite things about working from home. 😀
As someone who is working towards making blogging my full-time job (well, it is right now, but I’m not getting paid), this is really inspiring. I really need to work on being more productive!
Thanks for sharing, Melyssa!

Awesome! Glad you enjoyed this, Kristi. 🙂 And best of luck on earning an income with your blog! 🙂
I really like the idea of a technology-free bedroom. I am a notorious social-media-the-moment-I-wake-up abuser and I’d like to kick the habit. And an old-timey alarm clock sounds so adorable! Thanks for sharing!
I definitely think it helps! And then before bed I usually read a book, which makes it easier to sleep afterwards vs. looking at a bright screen. 🙂
I absolutely love that you shared this because I’m always intrigued by other people’s routines! I know that I’m the most productive from 9am-noon so I try to do the hard work then, and during the afternoon I get into a slump so I try to do anything menial that doesn’t require too much brain power haha
http://www.theblissfulmind.com
I’m pretty much the same way! I noticed I get pretty productive during the evenings, which has been a challenge for me! If I had it my way, I’d work 9am-12 and then 6pm-10pm, but I guess I need to have a life in the evenings or something. 😉
This was fun to read also interesting! It gave me a good idea of how organized schedule looks like! Thank you! What an adorable dog by the way! <3
Glad you enjoyed it, Hazel! And haha he’s a total ham 🙂
It’s so fun to see how other entrepreneurs work from home! Have you tried co-working yet? What were your thoughts on that? 🙂
I agree! And bah, NO! I still haven’t. I still would really like to — not sure what’s stopping me! Maybe it seems like a lot of work to register or something? I really should though! I think I’ll call a place today, thanks for the reminder, Stacia. 🙂
haha. I totally know that feeling. I hope that it’s a great experience for you when/if you try it! 🙂
This was such a nice read 🙂 Most people think that full time bloggers sit at home and do nothing but that is definitely not he case! 🙂
haha! Definitely not. 🙂
It’s exam time for my at the moment (only 1 week 3 days remaining) but I’ve been really enjoying having today command of my time. I’m so with you on getting out to a coffee shop to work. We have our favourite indenpendant that looks a little like a house and has big dining room-style table to spread out – just perfect!
Thanks for sharing 🙂 Beanie
http://www.blogofbeanie.co.uk
I adore places like that!! I think if I opened a coffee shop, it would have big communal tables too. I love those!
Interestingly enough, our roommate is moving out of our two-bedroom apartment next month, and I’m wondering if I can’t talk my boyfriend into helping me turn the empty room into an inspiring home office for me. I love the little space I have now, but the room that will be empty will have a view of the mountains from the window and I feel like that could be a whole new level to tap into! Now I’m off to find posts you did about how you got started! Your workflow sounds amazing and I’d love to get a freelance business off the ground to find something semi-similar.
Ohh I am SO jealous of that mountain-view office room! Sounds so inspiring and beautiful. 🙂 Y’know, I need to write more posts about how I got started! There aren’t too many of those lying around!
Loving that link to Coffitivity! I’m listening to it right now while I work 😀
Yay! I loveeee coffitivity! 🙂
I posted a blog about an average day for me as a freelance travel writer yesterday and I can’t tell you how similar our schedules are! We wake up at the same time, take lunch at the same time, and finish at the same time. That chunk of work time in the morning is most productive for me, too! There’s a stereotype that self-employed people get up late and laze around all day, but both our schedules show that that’s really not the case… in fact, we’ve stuck to a traditional working day 🙂
How interesting that our schedules align so similarly, Lizzie! I think you’re right that it’s pretty common for freelancers to stick to traditional working days. I wish more people saw that!
Hmmm… I’m intrigued by the classic alarm clock situation. I’m going to have to convince my husband that’s the way to go. Seems like a great way to disconnect.
It definitely is! I really like it. Plus, it looks cute next to me bed. 😉
I loved your this kind of posts … these always so relate-able and motivating 🙂
Aww yay! Glad you liked it, Filza. 🙂
im also a blogger and I work from home. My day sounds similar but with client consultations thrown in there as I’m a Nutritionist and Health Coach. I find people think that we only do a little bit of work each day but if they saw what we did I think they would be surprised. 🙂
I agree, Renee! I usually end up working more than my friends with regular 9-5 jobs. It’s too bad that stereotype exists.
I love hearing how everyone else spends their day. I’m also a full-time blogger as well as a full-time online student and it can sometimes be challenging to find a good schedule that works for me every day. It’s so helpful to hear how you all balance it all and schedule out your day 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed this, Keating! I love peeking into other people’s lives. 🙂
Omg stahhhhhp, these are the cutest photos ever! Your place looks adorable! I love your gallery wall and furniture and that photo of Monja all cuddled up!!! Eeeek you are too cute! When can I come and visit you?!
Awww you’re too sweet!! Glad you like it. 🙂 You should definitely come visit next time you’re in LA! We can talk corgis and blogging. 😉
Thanks for sharing 🙂 You made me look at my own work day to imagine better ways to organize myself to be productive!
That’s awesome to hear, Gabriela! 🙂
Awesome post! I always enjoy seeing how other bloggers and designers spend their days and how they organize their work! I also am in a habit that i check my email as soon as i wake up and i would love to get out of that habit, it just seems like I am always in work mode! Such cute pics too!
xo Caroline
http://www.calijaedesigns.com
I totally agree, Caroline. It makes it so tough to turn off and disconnect. I need to work on that, too!
I can’t believe how similar we are in our work day. The ‘watching an episode i have seen a million times whilst eating or working’ is me to a tee! I would love to be able to not take my phone into the bedroom with me but I’m just not there yet… ha ha! I think once my new site is up and running i will be looking at new ways to be more productive and organising my time more effectively.
Also I adore your feature wall! You have inspired me to do one. I have the perfect space to create in my living room ( ill blog the finished product 🙂 )
Thanks again lovely. xx
http://www.kelanabykayla.com
@kelanabykayla
haha! Glad you can relate, Kayla. 🙂 Which show are you always watching? For me it’s usually The Office, Psych, or House Hunters. 😉
That picture of Monja is so cute!!
hehe thank you Crystal! 🙂 He is such a ham.
I’m seriously amazed at how much you get done in one day! Especially being able to cook all of your own meals. Also, side note: If there is a corgi within 50 feet of me, I become completely helpless and unfocused, so extra props to you for staying on the ball 🙂
Thanks for all of your great posts!

Thanks Becca! It can really vary from day to day, so some days are easier than others. 🙂
And ha! He is laying next to me in his bed and really hamming up the cuteness. 😉
I think I need a dog so I can force myself to get up and take a walk! My cat could care less if I move and usually ends up sitting on me (like on my arms) while I try to type haha!
E-mail is so stressful. I either check it in the morning and it takes over my day or I put it off for a week and that’s no bueno either haha. When you figure out how to use e-mail effectively, please share it with me!! 😉
Ahh yeah dogs are awesome in that way! I hadn’t really thought about that, but if I didn’t have him I bet I’d go outside a whole lot less haha!
I thought that would make me get up and do so but…. er, my mum has been doing that and so it’s probably like she has another child all over again but on the other hand you kinda are outside that little bit more than if you didn’t have a dog if it’s just playing fetch or something 🙂
Could you share some tips on how not to get distracted while working at home? I have a huge problem trying to get concentrated on doing one thing…
Ohh yes, that can be tough! Here are a few ideas:
1. Turn off your phone.
2. Don’t check email first thing in the morning. In fact, set 2-3 specific times you’ll check it each day and don’t check it at all in between.
3. Get your most important task done first thing. Just start doing it even if you don’t feel like it. Usually the hardest part is getting started.
4. Clean up your workspace so it’s less cluttered. Clean workspace = clean mind.
5. Go for a walk, meditate, or exercise for a few minutes to clear your mind. Then get to work.
6. Spend 1-2 days per week working outside of your house. A change of scenery can really help.

A great read! I am curious as to whether you would ever use a day/weekly planner? Or just stick to writing it when you start the day?
I do use a day/weekly planner. 🙂 But I also make lists of things to do for each day.
I loved this post! I love seeing behind-the-scene posts. I’m the same way when it comes to checking my e-mail. I check it way too often, but I’m always super excited when I get new e-mails (not sure why? haha) Monja looks adorable by the way! And I love Coffitivity! Makes me feel like my house is it’s own coffee shop 🙂
Haha, there is definitely something oddly fun about receiving certain emails! And Monja says hey girl 😉 thanks for your sweet comment, Kelly!
this so helpful! I find that have such a hard time getting my schedule down pat … i tend do a lot all at once and feel like often times i am juggling too much at once! I see now that having a nice breakdown for the day to day could make such a difference in my productivity and also my happiness too! Thanks so much!
Oh it is so easy to get a bunch of things on our plates! I’m glad this could help 🙂
you are the best! I would love to work with you one day.. i seriously stalk your pinterest for tips and tricks all the time.
Awww, thank you! That’s so sweet 🙂
I am so glad to see a blogger/business owner who doesn’t wake up at 5:00 AM! I’ve been feel guilty for rolling out of bed around 9:00, but being able to set a schedule during the times that I work best is part of the reason I started working for myself in the first place.
Exactly, you said it perfectly! Being able to know and work at the best times for you is so nice. Thanks Hannah!
That is a really busy day! I am still in school so my roytine is basically: get up at six, check email, breakfast, bookmark some posts i want to read later the day, planning for the day. Going to school (while i answer everything else like blog comments in the subway and bus. Having school from 8 till five (and when I have time getting social with kther bloggers and write a part of a blog post.) Most of the time i photograph in the weekends for my blog!
It’s so interesting to see others freelancers routine. I’m more productive in the morning, so I force myself to wake up early as possible, usually at 7 am, get a cup of coffee and start to design right away. After made lunch for me and hubby, my energy goes low and I usually made no-creative tasks on afternoon. Exercise is a great power up by 5 pm, so I could study and research a little more by night before bed at 10 pm.
Love that routine! Thank you so much for sharing 🙂
Love the peak inside… thank you for sharing! May I ask: at the bottom of your posts – they look amazing… what plugins etc are you using for the social share, optin and author… It looks great… 🙂
Hey Pamela! Thanks for the kind words. I use Social Warfare with a little bit of extra coding for my social sharing buttons :]
Nice! I love that you get to sleep in lol. Day starts around 6 am for me. Filled with gym, work, walking the dogs and hopefully logging off around 6pm. ???? Ready for bed by 9 lol.
Your routine sounds like such a productive one! Keep it up and best of luck to you 🙂
