Aside from having a passion and skill for design and blogging, I think it’s important to have the right tools for the job as well. I’ve spent quite a lot of time researching and testing items that work best for me, so today I’d like to share a few of the products that I use on a regular basis. I think you’ll love them, too!
Wacom Tablet

This thing is my BFF4L. You plug it into a USB in your computer and then you’re able to use a pen and basically draw on the computer screen. This is awesome for adding your own hand-lettering to blog posts and is essential for much of the design work I do, too. It also speeds up many of my processes because you can use the pen in place of a mouse. Since I have more control with a pen, I can work more efficiently. Wacom tablets actually aren’t too expensive either. I have the medium tablet ($200), but the smaller version goes for only $100, which I think is a great investment for anyone in a creative, digital field.
Portable Hard Drive

I used to have a portable hard drive and would occasionally back up my computer…until it broke and I never replaced it. Then one day, one of my friends — a fellow blogger — told me that her computer suddenly broke and she lost everything. I literally bought a new portable hard drive that same day after having a mini panic attack over the thought of something like that happening to me. Now, I aim to back up my computer every week, to make sure nothing is ever lost. Can you imagine being a designer and losing all of your client files? #nightmare. I use a WD Elements hard drive, which is actually pretty cheap ($59 for 1TB?! Say whaa!). To use it, I just plug it into the USB on my Mac and back it up using Time Machine. If something ever happens to my computer or files, I can easily use my portable hard drive to restore it all.
Canon Scanner

I like to incorporate hand-lettering into a lot of my work nowadays, which means that I need a way to get it from pen and paper onto my computer without sacrificing quality. I searched high and low for a reasonably priced scanner that isn’t bulky and I really love this one. It’s inexpensive (can you tell I’m a deal hunter?), lightweight, and doesn’t need to be plugged into a wall socket — you just plug it into a USB on your computer. This makes it easy for me to store when I don’t need it. I’ve found this scanner to be essential when making prints or logos that use my own lettering or drawings.
Panasonic Lumix GF7KK

I actually have a Panasonic Lumix GF3, but it’s a few years old and now discontinued. However, Panasonic’s newer model of the camera looks awesome, and has a lot of features that I think would be useful for bloggers, such as the ability to upload directly to social media (better Instagram pictures!) and to easily take selfies from a distance using your cell phone as a remote (great for fashion bloggers who don’t have a photographer). The thing I love about the Lumix series is that it operates similarly to a DSLR with high quality photos and interchangeable lenses, but it’s much smaller and easier to carry around. Honestly, I don’t think I’d bring a clunky DSLR with me, but this camera is small enough to fit in my purse and takes equally great photos. Plus, isn’t it cute and vintage-y looking? 🙂

OMG this scanner is the best!
I really like it!
Love these suggestions!! I’ve been considering a Wacom tablet!
Glad to help, Abbie! They’re the best.
I really want to save up for a lumix (yes a dslr is soooo bulky!) and that canon scanner! Something to work for now 😉

Woo! Aren’t goals the best? Especially when they’re fun things you can buy for yourself. 😉
Love all these! Thanks for sharing. xx

Glad to help, Brittany! 🙂
I really love these types of posts! I’ve been wanting a Wacom for a while now, so maybe I’ll get it once I get my tax return. Thanks for bringing up that camera! Although I do love my iPhone I think its time I invest in a real camera with everything that is coming up for me and my future this year!!
Thank you for always letting us take a peek in what you do!
Glad you like these suggestions, Kele! And ohh sounds like exciting things are brewing for you!! What are you up to? 🙂
Since I was a kid I always wanted to run my own business. I’ve tried multiple etsy stores (and still have one open, though mostly friends just re-stock on it), but none of them I could do long term. I never wanted to keep on making the same thing over and over and over again. For the longest – I’ve wanted to do something with stationery and words. With my little girl just over halfway done cooking in the oven everything is very clear and I feel like I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. So the wacom is for my business – the camera is for the business (but mostly her).
So I never really said what I’m up to… but I want to create quarter sized flat note cards that people can either just hang up, or write a note on the back and share the encouragement. The first collection I’m doing is all sayings that I want my daughter to hear over and over again. I’m thinking I’ll do them in 4 packs (variety). And maybe if someone just wants one design in multiples that would be a custom order. And they’ll actually be the favors for my baby shower in May or June – so that gives me a definitive deadline to actually act on it, instead of it all being in my head!
Sounds really neat, Kele! I love notes of encouragement. 🙂 And I didn’t know you were having a baby! Major congratulations, that’s exciting! 🙂
You got really cool stuff! I always wanted a tablet. Would be nice. 🙂
Thank you! They’re a great investment 🙂
Those are good! I’m using all of the, and my iphone just as much! Scanning on the go, pictures sketching etc
Awesome! iPhones are definitely handy, too. 🙂
Thanks for rounding up your favorites! I’m always looking for the best return on investment when selecting business tools on a small budget. Loved how you nailed it from best value and price point, to giving clear examples of how each fits into your workflow on a daily basis!
Thanks Jennifer! I’m always looking for the best ROI, too, so I totally know how you feel 🙂
Awesome tips! Bookmarked in my “Blogging” folder… Definitely will explore buying these if my blog continues to grow. Thank you!

Niceeee!! Glad to hear you like it 🙂
A backup portable hard drive is the most important thing I have ever learned of (as a blogger and just as a human who uses the computer) I lost some of my files once and it sucked. Now I meticulously back things up. This has also helped me become much more organized as a blogger because I actually know where my files are.
Ain’t it the truth!! We rarely realize how important they are until we lose our files. Glad it’s helped you get organized, too! 🙂
The camera you mentioned sounds really interesting. I’m saving for a camera although I still don’t know what model I’m going to choose and this one is worth considering 🙂

Awesome, Cecil! 🙂
Thanks for the tips.
Will have to look for the Wacom tablet, although not the creative type I’m getting more into lettering. For all beginners out there, there is a lovely book to learn & practice: Hand lettering ledger by Mary Kate McDevitt

Awesome, Carine! And thanks for the book suggestion. 🙂
The Wacom tablet is pretty much my new best friend. Especially since I’ve gotten into hand lettering. Also if you’re into scanning your drawings and turning them into vector images on the computer, the Adobe Shape CC app is something to look into. I haven’t used the app that much, but the few times I did use it, I was really impressed by it.
Ohh I’ll need to look into that! Thanks for the tip, Melissa! 🙂
Great picks! I have an older Bamboo Wacom tablet that is still kicking. It’s like learning to draw and write all over again!

Ha! It seriously is. 🙂

I’m thinking of getting the Samsung NX Mini because my face shots are giving me soooo much grief, but I’ve heard they’re not all that good for product photos. The Lumix is tempting me but I’m not sure it’d be all that good for selfies :/
Hmmm I’m not too sure! It does have a “selfie” feature though (the screen swivels so you can see yourself) so it might be great actually 🙂
Wow! The camera looks so vintage, I love it!!!

I know right! Super cute!
Okay, I love that Wacom tablet. I never thought about using one but now that I see it, it definitely seems like a good investment. That camera is also amazing (but at $600, may have to wait for Black Friday). Thanks for all these tips! Something I can actually use!
–coffeeslag
It’s definitely a great investment 🙂 And the small version is only $100, so not too bad 🙂
that camera sounds awesome! and the scanner! ours is slowly dying so I might have to look into this. And man, I LOVE the Wacom tablet.
The scanner is great! I love that it plugs in via USB. 🙂
Great list! I’ve been searching for a good scanner, so I’ll definitely be researching the one you recommend.
Awesome! I really like it, especially that it doesn’t need to be plugged into a wall! 🙂
Great roundup. I JUST killed my Canon LIDE 110 scanner by squishing it. Be careful when moving it 🙂
My other must-have is a lightpad. I love the Huion LED one!
Ohhh a lightpad! That sounds like so much fun to use!
I’ve been looking for a great scanner! *Adds to amazon cart.*
haha! Yay!
I have been wanting to get a Wacom tablet for a while now, I didn’t know there was a $100 version. I might have to invest in one sooner rather than later!
Yeah!! They’re not as expensive as people think 🙂
Thanks a lot for suggesting the camera! I am thinking about getting a digital camera myself!

Yay! Glad to help! 🙂
Hey Melyssa 🙂 I was reading this again and got to wondering if you’d ever done a post like this but for apps/iphone? I use that for instagram, photos etc, so I was curious as to what sort of apps etc I was missing out on that could make my life easier!
Ohh great idea! I don’t think I have any posts like that, but will definitely add one soon. 🙂
Thank you! Basically all my social media, photographs etc are done on my phone, so a post like that would be so useful!
I’ve had my eye on a Wacom table for quite sometime, definitely getting it very soon! 🙂
Woop woop! You’ll love it! 🙂
Okay, LOVE my Wacom tablet, need to get that scanner! Thanks for sharing!
The scanner is awesome! Love that you don’t need a power outlet 😀
I play with the Wacom tablet at my university, but I would love to have one that was my own, I didn’t know the little ones were affordable. Definitely an investment to come!
I know right?! You’d think they’d cost more!
Love the scanner! Looks really awesome
It’s great! 🙂
I have pretty much an identical set of supplies! I got a Wacom tablet about 12 months ago after holding out for yeaaaars and now I know if I had just invested in one sooner, my work would have come along in leaps and bounds. Thank you for the back up reminder also, I’m onto it right now!
Sooo true! I always think that investing in new tools helps me up-level my work. It’s hard, but so worth it, right?!
Thanks so much for your suggestion! I’m actually happy that I read this before I went to splurge on a camera to help motivate myself again to blog!
A new camera is always a great motivator! I’m so happy found this helpful! Good luck with getting back into blogging, Susan 🙂
I like the look and style of the cannon scanner. Would this be a better purchase than a bar scanner?

I love using my Toshiba 1 TB portable hard drive to back up my computer and I also use DropBox as a second backup for my most important files as well. I recently had my MacBook Pro’s screen malfunction and I thought everything would be gone. So now I am super religious about backing up my files!
I usually use my Nikon D600 to take my blog photos, but I was thinking about investing in a new camera with a 360 flip screen, so I can actually see what I am doing.
Thanks for these cool tech supplies.
– Juliet from http://www.thelittlejewelsoflife.com
Ah yes, backing them up is SUPER important! And I think the cameras with the flip screen are so neat, especially if you’re interested in vlogging or recording yourself 🙂
My current love is my cell phone. When synced with all my accounts, it makes staying I the loop easier. Now that you mentioned it, I’ll need to break out my DSLR. On the Wacom tablet, is your writing similar to your writing on paper?
http://www.readingtothekidwithin.com
It’s very similar on the tablet! It sounds like you have some awesome equipment for your blog! 🙂
