Before heading to Alt Summit, a big design and blogging conference, I had heard all about the creative Alt Summit business cards I should expect to receive. In years past, it wasn’t uncommon for people to adorn their cards in gold foil, make them out of clear plastic, or attach gifts, such as cookie cutters or jewelry. I felt like I was a wee bit in over my head, as the only thing my current cards had going for them were rounded corners — yikes. I decided to order some new cards from Moo’s Luxe line, sans rounded edges, but with a thicker body and pink edges that I added myself. I also handed out a mini-print in honor of the paper goods I’ve been working on.
I like things to be clutter-free and simple, so I just included the most basic info — my name, a brief description of what I do, my URL, and my email address. I did appreciate the convenience when people listed all their social media handles on their cards, but I still like the simplicity of my design.

Here are my painted edges! I’ll share a tutorial on how to do this sometime soon, but it was pretty easy and the cards turned out very well. I liked that I used pink because it was easy to see. I used different paint colors on some of the cards, which is why they look a little stripey in the photo below, but individually they look normal. 🙂

I intended to put my business card and the mini print together into a clear sleeve and then tie them in baker’s twine. I had a vision, you guys. But the night before my flight at 11pm, I began attempting to stuff them into the clear sleeves and realized I bought a size too small. There was no way they were going to fit. So the next morning, on my way to the airport, I bought some black paperclips and attached the print and business cards that way. Not quite at cute, I guess, but on my way out of the office supply store in LA, a woman and I exchanged sincere compliments as we passed by each other on the street. It made me smile and calmed my Alt Summit nerves. I tend to remember the oddest, little moments of my connections with people, but it’s hard for me to forget sincerity. The little things, y’know?

I am a quote-a-holic, so choosing a quote that I wanted to share with people was really hard for me. I love Roald Dahl, however, and I think taking risks and being a little crazy is one of the best ways to succeed. So I give you Exhibit A:

By the way, I want to stress how silly of me it was to feel so concerned about the fashion and creative business cards of Alt Summit. Honestly, I didn’t think people were as extravagant as I expected — in a good way. I realize now that being authentic is the most important thing, or perhaps, the only thing.
What do you think of the cards? Do you have business cards for your blog?
p.s. I have some leftover mini-prints (they’re 4″x6″) and would love to throw one in if you buy anything here. 🙂

Can’t wait for the tutorial! The edges do give it something special. I love them. A tiny print is a nice touch too.
Thanks Meghan! Glad you like ’em 🙂
Gosh–I absolutely love the design and simplicity of it. Sometimes simple is more elegant than a fancy version of it. I am a firm believer that the quality of your work should reflect the kind of person you are and this definitely tells me (visually) that it’s Melyssa. I’m sure your work speaks volumes for just how fancy and awesome you can get.
I just went and ordered a bunch of business cards from Moo. The design was simple as it just had my name, photography business, social media handles and email address. The front of the design is a self-portrait photograph in color and black/white. I was getting ready to get all fancy with it but was also under a time constraint. I am planning on doing something even fancier with my referral cards though.
I love your business cards and the print that you paper clipped to them. The cards look like a great reflection of what I’ve seen from your blog and the other design work that I’ve seen you do.
I don’t have any business cards yet, but I just designed some. Mine aren’t quite as simple as yours–mostly because I decided against having separate cards for writing and blog. I’ll also have some from my mermaid business at some point and I know I won’t be able to keep track of three different sets! I’d end up at a writing conference with the cards for my blog. 🙂 But I arranged all of the information one way and then decided it was too orderly for me so I arranged them a different and sent a copy of the design to my friend to make sure it looked okay. She loved it and thought it looked like me so I’m happy with it. I’ll definitely be ordering them from Moo. My friend and I have an inside joke about Moo that still makes me crack up whenever I go to their website so that company has won a place in my heart. 🙂
I love your cards. Simple is definitely the way to go and the prints are so adorable. I also love Roald Dahl =)
I actually don’t have business cards of my own – One day, though, when I figure out my career.
I’m glad you like them! And it took me long enough to figure out mine — no worries there! 🙂
I love them! The perfect combination of creative and professional. I say smart more on simplicity, because now you can use them for anything. Even things outside of blogging. When I created my new personal business cards, I went for colorful and simple also. The front advertised me and the back my blog (which was a simple URL and name.)
Awesome! And you’re totally right — I think part of the simplicity was so that I could use them for more than just Alt. That’s great that you have cards for your blog too. Love colorful and simple 🙂
I loved your cards and the quote was perfect! I grew up on Roald Dahl and love when other people appreciate the same things I do. You looked effortlessly fab btw, like you just roll out of bed looking that amazing, I’m surprised you even have it a thought! It was so great meeting you!
Can I hire you to live with me and say things as sweet as that everyday? Because every interaction I’ve had with you has given me this big dumb smile — you are too kind, Gilit! And I’m so glad you liked the cards/print! So glad I got to meet you!! 🙂
I love these so much! I love the combination of black and white with a pop of pink in an unexpected place. The fonts and lettering are amazing too! What a fun look 🙂 xo, gina
Thank you so much Gina! 🙂
love them!! so so adorable 😀 and have seen these all over around alt posts already 😉
Aw that makes me smile! 🙂
I’m in the process of redesigning my cards and site. I find the simple layout of your cards really inspiring. I’d rather have the basics and seek the other stuff out than to have to wade through all sorts of info on someone’s card. 🙂
Side note, that thing I mentioned with Bloglovin and commenting seems to be fixed. I don’t know if you did anything or the error resolved itself, but I just wanted to let you know. 🙂 Either way, your blog is one of my favorites and I like being involved in your community, so it’s always worth it to me to leave a little note. 🙂
I’m glad you like simple, too. 🙂 And yay for the Bloglovin’ thing being fixed! You are so sweet. I’m glad to have you involved in this community, Stacia!
I love business cards! It took me a while to settle on a design but now I love what I use. I make all my own and print them out on watercolor paper so I can splatter and brush them with watercolor. Tedious but the perfect match for my business/shop/blog etc 🙂
That sounds beautiful and so you!
They look awesome 🙂

Thank you Hayley! 🙂
These are amazing! I love how they go perfectly with your blog theme <3
You are so talented! xoxo
Thank you beautiful!
Love your business cards – especially the pink edges. Would be great to hear about some of the things you learnt at the summit 🙂
Thanks Claire! 🙂 And I actually wrote a post about some of the things I learned here: https://melyssagriffin.com/2014/06/tips-i-learned-at-alt-summit/ 🙂
Very cute and very you! I love the front. Glad it was a positive experience!
Thank you!! I kind of love when people say that something is “very you.” Always makes me feel understood. 🙂
I love the look and vibe of your business cards! I just designed my own using Moo.com (I just started my own brand/business) but I feel as though the style of my business cards will eventually evolve! Do you do business card designs for brands?
Thank you so much Jacalyn! I no longer do one on one services!
